I understand that Grade 6 Theory is a big jump from Grade 5 Theory. My kids refuse to continue with Grade 6 Theory. Can some piano teachers give me some insights ?

They have passed their Grade 5 Theory. They only want to continue with Grade 6 practical and move on to Grade7 and 8 practical.

that’s fine too. in fact, that’s what i did.

unless they intend to go ahead to teach piano etc, or have a real love for music theory, grades 6-8 theory is not totally necessary. grade 5 already gives a pretty good foundation.

might give them more time to focus on practical and get a better grade there than struggling thru theory with no love for it.

i think that is perfectly fine

after Grade 8 practical has been passed, and if want to continue some more, then go for the Grade 8 theory

            Hi Toddles & Verykiasu2010,

Thanks for the feedback. I shall consent to my kids to drop their Grade 6 Theory.

Most don’t carry on with theory after the "compulsory" 5. As a teacher, I have to say, grade 6-8 theory helps in the higher grade practical as it helps the student understand the structure of the music in a better way, but then, how many teachers actually point these things out to a student? Not many. Anyway, even if you want your child to pursue practical music beyond grade 8, it still won’t be necessary to take grades 6-8 theory.
