Impressive!!! :ugogirl:Hi Sleepy,
My k1 DD is reading Charlie & the chocolate factory. I asked her to read aloud to me & I do test her and see if she understand what's she reading. When she read about the how yummy those chocolate were, she was drooling with delight & craving for chocolate! I was elated as this shows she knows what she's reading. We watched the show with her too, when she read, she can recall certain scenes from the show.
But when I taught her how read, she learnt it through sight words, not through phonics way, hence she can't spell that well. I hope to improve in this area, which will help her with creative writing. -
All thanks to Peter & Jane books & the inspiration from tamarind's blog! I m sure those who started their kids for reading/ phonics class at a young age can read very well too.

Hi MMM,
How is LCentral's materials for writing?
My kids attended their creative writing holiday camp before and they enjoyed it. They have a structured way for teaching the kids on to write compo and I think it is structured around the 5 Ws and 1H concept. I saw their materials previously and found their writing approach quite structured and if it guides the child to think along that line, I am sure it will help. But again, it's only my P3's 1st week officially so I can't really tell now.
Thanks
So far, I have not heard of anyone who went there (not among my friends anyway). Might go down to their centre to take a look. Is their class covering creative writing alone or do they cover other parts of english?

Hi sleepy,
Is TAS material 'academic'? Where do you view their materials?jeestan:
I was thinking of The Alternative Story. I have seen their materials and I like them. They seem to be very strong in composition but the timing so far clashes with my son's other lessons.
I will still shop around, if really no choice then I would have to change some of my son's classes so he can go to TAS.
How about you? What centres have you tried and are they effective?
I've not seen TAS materials. My impression is they're pretty clever in the way they market their center, successfully generated a lot of interests in this forum. Seem to be expanding too rapidly though, hopefully teachers' standard can substain?
Then again, I better keep an open mind to all options since I've scouting high & low for an English enrichment the last few months
My dd attended icreative for 2 years. I think icreative is more suitable for preschool. I am not too impressed with their primary level materials & have withdrawn her quite some time ago
Hmm, I don't really know what you mean by academic. :? But I found that their materials quite different from what I have seen at some centres and it provides quite a lot of vocabulary to help the children to write. They also focus on teaching children to write with a variety of sentence structures and teach them how to do something called 'building tension'. It seems good from what I have seen. I went down to their centre to view, I made an appointment to do so.
I don't know if the quality of all the teachers are good..I did not really ask about the teachers. Yes, I think they are smart in their marketing but I think they are also very good in their content knowledge from the way they answer the questions. One of my friends went for one of their workshops. She said that the teacher doing the talk really knows what she is talking about and has quite solid methods to teach writing.
But for myself, I am still shopping around as I think there could be other centres out there that are also good. So must look look see see first before deciding.
Have you seen The Write Place (at Jurong)? I read some forummers talking about it. -

Sorrie... pardon me.. wat is TLL?
It is The Learning Lab. It is very well-known and many parents fight to get their children in. I think it is more suitable for students who are smart as they cater more for them. I am not sure if they are good but should be not bad lah with so many parents trying to get in.
They have a branch at United Square. It looks very professional. -

Oh.. i see.. ya.. my gal used to attend LW United sq and I saw the school. Yes they look impressive. Read before somewhere that they teach at a faster pace than school and more at times so quite good. They have a lot of students. The weekend crowd at United sq is scary.XK:

Hi XK,
Saw your posting that your gal used to attend LW United Sq. My gal also attending. Would like to find out from you on the timing you were being allocated during their half-yearly Parent-Teacher Meeting. Was it the same?
TIA

My son (next yr K2) just assessed by LC, and he is posted to "Preparation for School", is this programme good?
Was hoping he can go to Liftoff programme, as I find his blending not so good. But the staffs said he would feel bored in liftoff since he already know how to read.
Anyone here can advice. -
