is "GEP" sth that can be "forced"? i always thought if one is gifted, he/she is gifted "naturally". wouldn’t it be v tough on the kid if he is forced to go thru all these gep preparation classes and not knowing what is going on most of the time?

Hmm...better to go \"GEP enrichment\" and train for GEP test than to take normal tuition....

Well, after going thru the appeal exercise, your statement above do make sense.

Imagine, if you 'forced' your kids to go thru some of these GEP prep course and finally your DS/DD ended up in GEP class...he or she not only ended up learning with the top students, get the best teachers, smaller cohort size, first in Q for DSA etc, they also get the extra benefits when appealing even when their t-score shine less bright compared to some of the maintstreamers.

of course, on the other hand, we also have to think of the holistic development of our INDIVIDUAL kid...why is parenthood so tough???

But back to my basic thoughts, give thanks....比上不足,比下有余。

Should consider sending kids for GEP enrichment. After all, GEP student has all the privileges, someone with 238 entitled scholarship & accepted by good schools (such as RI, HCI through DSA).

Well, i have observed how kids can be trained, if they are exposed from young, like my friend's son was bc he himself had been administering and marking gep papers all these years. If they'd never been exposed, no matter how smart, may not realise what is the approach to these types of questions right?

            eg. if A+B=C ... then F+G = ???
If you'd never done before these types of questions, would you know the correlation and that the answer is \"M\"? But in reality, it is too way simple, just need exposure.

If a kid CAN be trained, that child can handle, lah.
If train already, still so dumb, then no choice lor. Really dumb lor.

I am still of the opinion that there are gifted kids and above average kids. If the above average kids are forced into GEP due to training, they will suffer in there as the GEP programme has more robust syllabus, more projects and lesser time for actual PSLE preparation. Thus, the kid may not cope well.

If the above average kid is in the mainstream and with the PSLE preparation in place, they can perform better and will score better to go to a good school.

Those cases of GEPpers scoring way below 260 are usually the ones who are neither here nor there. If they do not end up with a DSA offer (which some really do not get any), they will end up far worst off. If they had been in the mainstream, they may be enjoying school and having a easier time (compared with struggling in GEP), and adequately prepared for PSLE, thus able to score well with their above average capability.

The grass is always greener at the other side, but may not be really greener when you are standing there taking a closer look. For info, I've seen cases of kids \"trained\" into GEP and end up \"suffering\" and going nowhere in there - the parents may think they are doing for the kids' best interest when in fact they are not, such irony!

Be appreciative of what you have been GIVEN.

They may not be Gifted but they are indeed given to us (=gifts).

My kids need not be in a GEP class, we are happy as long as they are in a Happy Class.
                  😄

There are differences between smart kids n gifted kids. Gifted kids just are because they’re wired differently. I don’t believe in having to train kids to be gifted. The program is for those who are simply just wired that way that’s why they need a differentiated curriculum n different methodology. I can understand parental anxieties for wanting the best for their kids but is being in GEP truly best for kids who aren’t really gifted but are merely smart?? Gidted kids makes leaps of thinking n connections effortlessly cos thats one of their characteristics. Those wired differently, the smart ones who nevertheless are convergent rather than divergent (as gifted kids tend to be) may wonder whats wrong with them how come they cant see the connection or make the leap as effortlessly. during my time, doing triple science was for what people regarded as the smartest. But is it smart to have someone who’s gifted in languages do triple science no matter how smart that person is? I think not. I think it’s smarter for kids to be where they truly belong. There is a place for everyone. Those who aren’t academically inclined aren’t doomed. Celebrity chefs and celebrity hairstylists may not be academically inclined but they sure are very talented in their fields and well respected for their talents. It’s just sad that parents seem to recognise only one type of intelligence.

                      Very weird postings.

So many here assume only RI can bring out the best out of their sons. If a student is not competitive vs a vs the entire cohort in RI, there’s nothing big to crow about. Compare to another high achiever who’s in another very good school and has been given ample opportunities to hone his academic, cca and leadership skills, the guy in RI fares poorly.

There’s no such thing as the best school only the most suitable school to bring out the best from these smart boys. RI is one among the handful.

Others are equally competent to groom your boys.

Parents are trained to recognize intelligence the way MOE and the Singapore society recognize it.
