Thanks. Visible Thinking is used at home.janet_lee88:
But I pity son for having to do Onsponge, My Pals Homework book as well as activity book...never ending.
And, maybe, Visible Thinking in the future.
Best wishes -

and am using that + Shaping Maths to complement the My Pals are here textbook
...Gal is having CA1 Maths on March 1 and am building her foundation and explaining the concept to her...Or else, she will still make mistakes without understanding why

I'm using Shaping Maths at home for weekly practice. She is using 'Discover Maths' in school. She has no CA/SA at P1/2.

Son in P5 has CA1 Maths on 1 Math too...using Shaping Maths as revision. Didn't buy Visible Thinking for P5 since I've bought enough assessment books for the year. -

I am impressed with your analysis of the workbooks and thanks for your time in sharing them with us. May I know your background/personal blog/tutoring experience ?
You mentioned you specialise in Maths and Science. I would appreciate if you can give some suggestions about Upper Primary Science assessment books (there are too many in the market). Perhaps you can start a new thread on Science....thanks in advance! -

This is Zhou Shicai, Head Mentor of NickleBee Tutors. Thank you your reply. I do teach both Maths and Science but i prefer to focus on helping students with the challenging maths syllabus they face nowadays and build up their problem solving skills at the same time. I teach science only upon request by parents of my students.
Perhaps you would like to refer to my tutoring profile in the KiasuParents Forum Personals section for more information about myself and my teaching methodology?

Both methods are applicable but for branching method is easier to do and faster to get the answer. Model method is used to teach primary kids as they could not understand algebra at their age.

HI Everyone,
I printed out 2-3 schools Maths CA1 for P5 to let son practice his Section A. But didn’t realize most of the questions include chapters he hasn’t been taught yet.
Need your advice if Li Fanglan’s Primary 5 FAN-Math MathExpress Speed Maths Strategies Level 5 will be of help. Please advise. Thanks. -

I have just browse through some of the things you have written, like your analysis of the different books in the market. Personally, I have a few of the books - Challenging Maths, OnSponge, A*Star (from InteractiveLearning, used in school).
My DS is P5 and enjoys Maths.....however, my problem now (a good one though) is he's claims that the assessment books I have bought previously are too easy. Now he doesn't even want to continue with his P5 OnSponge. While occasionally he would have difficulty on a question or two from Challenging Maths/A*Star, generally he seems to be coping well. Although I know he's pretty strong, I can't exactly gauge too :?
Right now, I do not see the need to drill him with unnecessary assessments, but yet I dun want him to become complacent. Hope to hear your advice/recommendation on books that I can get that can challenge him further. Should I get him P6 Onsponge? But there will be topics he has yet to learn.
Thanks. -

You have a lucky problem...my son finds Maths at P5 very tough. I have Challenging Maths (but kept it up as he finds it tough) and Onsponge (school teacher ordered for class). For Challenging Maths (Ammiel Wan), the questions inside are not from specific chapters like ratio for eg...so it's really hard to draw a comparison. -

thanks for the info....I feel very paisay after reading all the mommies sharing their knowledge. You must have spent a lot of time on your kids' work cos' each of you are so detailed and aware of the syllabus, questions, methods etc. I have been rather 'lazy' for the last 1+ years (partly due to family constraint hence my 'big' plan to study with my kids were shelved). So I'm still in a maze right now  Time for me to buck up!!!
For my son, I do feel rather lucky that he's quite independent, otherwise I would have been rather stressed. But I do feel apologetic towards him, I didn't have enough time and energy to pay much attention to him and didn't really stretch him even tho he has the potential. Guess gotta start catching up cos' next year PSLE plus I believe my P4 DD will face trouble in Maths next year.....
So first must find something tough to challenge DS
But seriously, every child is different, hard to be strong in every subject. Like my DS and DD are both not too good in English and Science......I believe a lot to do with being a late reader and not reading enough.
