All About Home Addresses

3Boys:
all these starts from shifting to nearby a school? :!: wow !
The irony is that the spirit of this policy is so to enable students staying near the school to have priority entry. Instead, what it has engendered is a secondary property market which drives parents to make major shifts in lifestyle and finances to gain an advantage, or 'game' the system with various combinations of 'grandparents address', 'rentals', 'TOPs' etc.cornucopia:
Dear all,
MOE takes serious action to those who use false address. Do take own children in consideration as children may be out of school should they make random checks. :stupid:
This is to protect those who are really living in that area of <1km. Not many have financial ability to rent units just to use address for P1 registration. It will take away a place for children who geniunely live near school.
Thanks!
The message this sends to the children is that even the merest sliver of advantage to be gleaned to gain entry to a 'premier' school should be pursued and exploited. I.e. At all costs and no holds barred.
Once this sinks in, you have just shifted all the bargaining chips to your children. They can do anything, demand anything, as long as it gains them an 'advantage' in schooling/education/grades. It'll start with small things like rewards for grades, then requests for 'chauffeur' services, and finally a demand for you to sell your home and compromise your retirement so that they can attend an Ivy League uni.
Think its a joke? I've seen this happen, pity the poor misguided parents. Pity the kids too, who now have the completely wrong values imbibed.
Move house to get within range of a school? Not in a million years. -

Tankee,
its all in the attitude that parents project. You've seen for yourself to what lengths parents would go to. Personally I find the thought of uprooting a family, paying over the odds for a suboptimal abobe, and possibly compromising on finances, for the sake of increasing the odds of entry into a popular school, completely preposterous. Am I the only one that feels this way, or am I out of place in a forum titled \"Kiausparents\"
The school is only one part of the equation. I think such energies are better applied to coaching the kids or modelling the values, or dollars saved for a vacation or a charity trip to a poor country.
P.S. Sorry CKS, just taking a mild dig at your wonderful site. -

Aw... dig away...
it is only through an open forum are we able to get to the heart of issues to deepen our appreciation for each other's point of view. And I thought it should be quite clear by now that we maybe kiasu, but not stupid

I'm going to sit out of this discussion for a bit. All I can say at this point is that this is all based on economics - demand and supply, and any attempt to regulate the process will always be subject to criticism by those who felt they were discriminated by the system, and also those who felt the regulation creates unhealthy side-effects on our children or society as a whole. There will be people who really need to move for good reasons, and there will be those looking to subvert the system to their advantage at any cost. The challenge is to define a system that can effectively diminish the desire for the latter to want to do so, without making the whole process so onerous and complicated that it penalizes everyone else.
PS. 3Boys, I really liked your thesis on the issue of PV in the other thread, though I felt it trivialized the PV process a little too much. For one, the boys of the Light Brigade did not have a choice at Balaklava - they were led by a series of mistakes made by their leaders. We as parents do have the choice of weighing our options in deciding where we can place our children, assuming we know what our options are, in the first place. -

Thanks Chief, you are too kind. I have managed to ruffle a few feathers these few days and am going to sit low for a while...3Boys:

hi
I prepare to move near to the school. But after moving still my child may not get admission. so i have below plan, is that leagl?
1. Currently i own a HDB house. My target school is quit very far from my house.
2. I plan to rent a house witin 1km to the school to get priority registration. ofcourse I will change my IC and will physically plan to stay in that address.
3. If it is sucessful, then I plan to buy a propery within 1km from the school and will move to my new house.
Is it legal? -

Yes and yes. Because you will be staying there, in both the rented home and eventually bought home. As for the rented home, I think you need to produce bills, etc addressed to you at the rented home for a number of months before you can change your address. I'm not sure about this but I vaguely recall that this was asked and answered in this thread already so you just need to scan from the start. (However, I also recall someone else posted saying that you don't need to wait for a few months before changing the address. Best is to scan the whole thread.)hi

hi
thanks for your reply.
i have scanned the whole thread, but there is no clear cut answer for it.
i.e. can i move to another property within 1km vicinity? -
ssbabudilip:
Sorry, I guess it's not here. Maybe it's under the \"priority\" thread.hi

Yes, you can move to another property within 1km. If you moved outside the 1km, then I'm not sure.
ADD: These are 2 more threads where I may have read about it.

I thought the OB markers are quite clear - the address you use to register must reflect the location where you WILL BE STAYING with your child during his Primary school stint. MOE will not stop you from moving, especially if you move to another location within the same distance bucket of the address you registered with. However, if you move further away before P3, you may be subject to inquiry.hi

Hi,
I have a question regarding P1 registration.
We used to live sometimes at my parent’s place and sometimes at our home. This was because my children’s childcare centres are near my parent’s home.
We have left our registered address as my parent’s address because when my kids returned from primary school now, they will always return to my parent’s place to be looked after by their grandparents while we are at work.
They are not in any so-called popular school. In fact, my kid is in one of those neighbourhood school near my parent’s place. Have we in anyway broken any rules? Any advice on this issue will be greatly appreciated.
