That is terrible. May I know is that one of the top schools (those with GEP), or is it a neighbourhood school ?

        Hi Getz

Yes, our kids learn after a while what the appropriate behaviour is & what is not. Eg drinking in class, is not allowed. He told me as soon as the teacher turns toward the blackboard, he gulps the drink asap.

        Hello Tamarind & All Parents

If you happen to have children who are developing faster than kids of the same age, will you inform the teacher of your kids development?

Not a neightbourhood school, but one of the aided ones... not GEP. That he only got a transfer in P4.

Will I tell teachers if my child is exceptional...hmm no! I think teachers may start to pick on him or may think I'm a parent who thinks too highly of my child etc. Teachers are not the most understanding lot (too much work) .. I was a teacher before, once upon a time! And I know some who would pick on kids. (especially when they feel parents are interfering). so I don't take chances unless I know the teacher well. ๐Ÿ˜„

              EN, Getz,

I think the teacher should be able to recognize the ability of the child who is more advanced than the rest of the class. All teachers have been through training in NIE. They should know how to handle kids who finished their work very quickly. I think it is not right to make such kids just sit on the chair and do nothing.

I believe that most teachers are more concerned about students who are potential failure cases. They should not pay much attention to those who are doing well. So long as he/she is not disturbing the class.

I think that that child should be taught to respect the teacher. When the teacher is teaching, the child should pay attention. Even if he already knows everything she is saying, it is basic courtesy to listen when someone is trying to say something to you, no matter how boring it is ๐Ÿ™‚

But the teacher does not talk through the whole lesson, right ? I am sure that half the time the students are asked to do work on their own. If a student completes the work in 5 minutes, while the rest of the class takes 30 minutes, then the teacher should give that student freedom to do whatever he wants, so long as he is not disrupting the class.

I am not sure how my girl's future primary school will be like. But I plan to talk to the teacher, not about my girl's development, but to understand from her what she thinks is the correct behaviour in class. I will definitely feedback to her or the principal if I think anything is not right. So I guess it is important to find a school which has teachers/principal who are willing to listen to feedback.

I am actually \"complain queen\" ๐Ÿ™‚ My girl's dance class teacher(included in her PCF kindergarten) used to be late for up to 20 mins. No parents dare to complain. When I found out, I immediately complain to the head of the kindergarten. After that there was improvement.

So if they can do well for these 2 subjects, some questions are beyond their level, they get shortlisted for the 2nd round of test.

There is a GAT (General Ability Test) paper which the child will need to take besides English and Maths for round 2. This is a psychometric test which supposedly will be able to differentiate those who are more suited for the GEP program than others.

The GEP only identifies children who are gifted in english and maths.

There are many different types of giftedness. Like Mozart who is gifted in music, and Picasso who is gifted in art. I don't think they can get into the GEP ๐Ÿ˜„ I think even Bill Gates or Donald Trump also may not get into the GEP ๐Ÿ˜„

There are also people who are gifted in interpersonal relationship, and they can sell anything to anyone. They may not even pass their O levels, but they may become very successful(rich) property agents, etc. Personally I think these people are very gifted.

How about kids who are superb in maths, but only average in english ? I think their overall scores will still pull them down right ?

I don't know the answer. But my feeling is no. My gut feeling is the tests can identify the really talented ones. Do see some GEP kids who are very strong in Maths but average in English. And others who are exceptionally strong in languages but average in MAths and Science.

However, we cannot deny the fact that those who are more prepared, ie those who have done well generally academically, stand a higher chance to get into GEP, or at least shortlisted for 2nd round. I am not sure, but there could be kids who are late developers and they may be filtered out at P3. In the past, after P6, selected students again will go for GEP tests to see if they are eligble for Secondary GEP. But since most of the secondary GEP centres have turned independent, MOE has stopped this practice.
