In addition, you will need to book under different Passport/NRIC no since 1 person can only book max. 6 tickets.

A tip my minsu owner taught me, if you can't secure tickets from Taipei to Hualien, try to book Taipei-Yilan, Yilan-Hualien instead. Fare should be the same.

I was trying to do Internet booking for train from Taipei to Hualien for 4 adults and 4 kids but didn't get past the first page because It loked like the max no of tickets allowed was 6. There was also no field to select adult/child ticket (is there a diff in price?), nor was there a choice between single trip and round trip. Can someone advise me please?

Someone suggested we could book a mini bus instead of going by train. Is that a good idea in terms of cost anytime? Thank you!

      Hi,

U have to split into 2 bookings. U'll be able to choose adult and kids tickets at the payment page, if I remember correctly. Follow the instructions in the previous blog link I posted. It's very helpful.

Travelling by train is definitely cheaper and faster. Cos if by coach and u're engaging the same driver for hualien day tour, u'll have to pay for his lodging. We took a train from Taipei to hualien and engage this driver for train-hotel transport and day tour. Very humble and nice man. His contact 李建樑 0933-914583

        Extracted this from TA.

        http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowTopic-g297907-i10340-k4871928-o10-Hualien_to_Taipei-Hualien.html#37218932

TRA allocate all their tickets by Quota, so it make sure all stations get some tickets, but not all long-distance travel will be cut by short-distance reserved tickets.

Let's say a train from Taipei to Hualien via Yilan has 10 seats, the allocation would be like: Taipei-Hualien 7 tickets, Taipei-Yilan 3 tickets, Yilan-Hualien 3 tickets, which make up a full 10 tickets from Taipei-Hualien.

When you try to buy a Taipei-Hualien tickets and found there are none, that means the 7 seats are sold out, but not necessarily the remaining 3 seats, so if you separate your trip to two tickets Taipei-Yilan and Yilan-Hualien you might be able to get it.

You can also wait til last minute to see if anyone suddenly refund a ticket,

This works on all of TRA's railway system.

We did a 8 days tour round Taiwan with No. 1, 6-8 days in Taipei. It was raining on the 8th day that we have to use an umbrella. The night before we had very light drizzle and we were at wu fen pu. But still can survive without umbrella. Weather is definitely turning cold as well. Otherwise the other parts of Taiwan are great. We didn’t get much rain.

Do you mean Chinese New Year CNY in Taipei? According to the tour guide, CNY is the worst time to visit.According to him there is a block leave period during CNY because a lot of people work in Taipei and stay in other outlying areas, so during this period they travel back to their home town. I presume a lot of outlets would be closed for holiday. If you are thinking of shopping, places might not be open. Tourists attraction would be packed with their own people since it is holiday.

I have not tried it myself, but we are staying put in Singapore during CNY.
Perhaps you could double check with the tour agent again.
