Planning my first self drive trip in Malaysia. Maybe will bring my gal too. 3yo.

Can you help me by giving me more info on what u can do at Ipoh and Cameron Highlands?

hi, if this is your first trip to Malaysia , maybe Cameron is too far away?
Unless you use GPS (but this defeats the fun of driving).

The NE highway after Toll SungeiBesi can be quite confusing for first timers

Does anyone know whether travel agencies use the old road or the new road up to Cameron? The reason for asking is that I am prone to motion sickness and will throw up if the road is really winding. :oops: We don't have a car, so driving up on our own is out of the question. Been wanting to go to Cameron but kept putting it off because of this reason. My last time there was donkey years ago.

Can checkout the agencies at Malaysia travel fair 16-18Oct (I am not sure of date). Kids will likely vomit at the \"traditional\" road :sick:

If going to Cameron Highland, it is recommended for you to use Elite Highway instead of going through Sungai Besi toll. I cant recall the exit name but after Nilai, watch out for the next exit. It should state to KLIA, Ipoh etc. Just follow the route to Ipoh and you will re-join the North South highway just before Sg Buloh overhead bridge.

I went Cameron twice last year. First trip there, the kids had a enjoyable time plucking strawberries and climing up the tea plantation. Also there are vegetable farms, Bee farm, cactus farm which I felt very educational. But journey to Cameron from S’pore by car is long (about 600km). Going up and down Cameron will have some ear pressure in young kids and cause some discomfort.

Strawberry resort is located in a exclusive spot. The road leading to the resort is very winding which I do not like. I previously stayed at \"Smokehouse\" (about RM500/night) and \"Casa De Rosa\" (3 star but rooms are huge and balcony overlook the car park). Cameron Resort looks good but rates are quoted in USD.

Depending on your budget and preference, accommodation in Cameron varies. Lots of accomodation there (from cheap to very expensive). I walk-in and asked a 1-bedroom apt before. Rate was cheaper than hotel. Unfortunately these accomodations do not have a web site. Most sporeans will stay at Equatorial hotel. It is ideally located and you can walk to the butterfly park and souvenir shops from the hotel.

Wah, a lot of people are going to Cameron heh. In our previous trips, we have stayed in a bungalow and Casa dela Rosa.


I must say that the bungalow experience is the best - fantastic lifestyle. It comes with a highly skilled cook (one of those hainanese cooks, who can whipped up a good english breakfast, scorns for tea and a sumptuos chinese meal in the evening type) - luv it.

Anyway, we’re making a trip again this mid Nov. Could not get a bungalow though. So we’re booked for Century Pines - supposedly renovated. Let’s see

If not because of the long journey, I will like to go back Cameron again soon. The weather is fantastic. If I not wrong year end will be a wet month. It will be extremely cold at night (good to eat the popular streamboat for dinner)


Century Pines looks like a nice hotel from outside. Do tell us more about the hotel when you are back from your trip

It's a long journey if you drive all the way from Singapore.

But if you fly to KL (1 hr flight) and drive another 2-2.5 hrs; or fly to Ipoh (1.5 hr flight) and drive less than 1 hr - you're there ! :lol:

Yes, Ddecember can be wet, and that's why we try to get there a little earlier - mid Nov and hopefully drier and yet quite cool at night

Flying to KL will be the cheapest thru budget airline. Then renting a car from the airport to Cameron. Firefly to Ipoh is so expensive (perhaps only airline direct to Ipoh that's why). I hope budget airlines will soon come out with a more competitive rate to Ipoh. There are so much good food and attractions in Ipoh
