DS showed me his first Math Test yesterday, and I nearly fainted..

The test was upon 20 marks, and the boys had to complete it in 10 minutes (what a feat!)..
DS couldn't complete all the questions, hence he performed really badly (weep weep)..
Any mummies had the same shock as I had?

Thankfully it's a math quiz, marks not counted. Although it's 8 questions, but each question has 2 or 3 parts right? How to finish in 10 mins? ds did badly. Due to time constraint, he rushed through and made many careless mistakes. Is it going to be like that for major tests and exams?

My Ds said he got all correct as his teacher give them tt math quiz as homework .(No time limit) . šŸ˜‰

Actually a 10 mins or even 5 mins Maths Pop quizzes are not really that uncommon in IP schs.
        And some are even graded....
(sometimes, only after the maths quizzes , then they are told that it will be graded.... evil, right?)
I remembered there was 1 maths quizz where almost the whole class failed as the topic was not even taught,
initially was told that it was graded but the whole class made hell lots of noises,
Screaming of \"unfairness\", which softened the teacher's heart, and finally the teacher gave in....haha
Yes, in the beginning, most parents are kinda of shock as not used to seeing crosses on paper here and there.
Not to worry too much, either they will improve on their speed,
revise more regularly and practise more diligently before the maths quizzes or they/we get used to it..... šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜‚

Nvm, at least like what firefly said, according to her ds's teacher, it's not going to be like that in exams.

Subjects like PE, Philosophy and Research are graded (i.e. given a grade like A, B, C), but do not count towards GPA. For these subjects there are no exams but are graded according to tests, projects, etc.

For normal subjects there is a Mid Year Exam and End Of Year exam.

I'm not quite sure about promotion criteria but it is not difficult to pass everything so long as you work hard and don't overstretch (in terms of other commitments like CCAs).

Third language may or may not help in GPA. The old formula takes the average of all subjects and the new formula takes the main few subjects (for upper sec I think it was 5) plus the next (3 for upper sec) best performing subjects. The higher one of the old and new formula is taken. For third language students take the O level in sec 4 unless they quit earlier.

Thank you.... So, is the child at a disadvantage if he doesn't take a third lang then?

Its kinda a tradeoff. 3rd language takes a lot of time and effort on your son's part, it's not easy and you may or may not see great results from your son at all. Sure, you may get an extra score from this, but whats the score? Sacrificing time and effort on your 3rd language rather than revising other subjects may result in poorer scores in your other subjects. It's a calculated risk that will pay off if you do well, but at what cost?

and by the way, a pass in RE is a promotional criteria according to what I know.

Thank you...RVTenor, for your sharing. I suppose unless your child is really interested in the particular 3rd lang, the best is not to go for it.
