22mths and still not talking. Time to panic?

Dear parents…
do you remember at what age did your child start talking?
My second boy is already 22mths and he’s only saying "mama" and "baba". Nothing else.
Should i send him for some speech assessments or should i just wait and see?
I remember his elder bro was a late talker but by this age, korkor seems to be able to utter at least 1 or 2 words. -
Does he understand what you are saying most of the time? If he does, then just wait a while more before going for those assessments. Talk to him more and ask him questions with choices. Get him to say a choice.
Also, try to expose him to more kids. My son started 1-2 words at 18mths then after attending a childcare for 2months, he could chatter away and he is now one of the more talkative boys in class…
I find that most of my friends with late talkers either keep their kids at home with adult caregivers or the kids have no other siblings. Kids need stimulation to develop their speech and social skills.
If he’s already attending a preschool, then discuss with his teachers. -

Just to share. I too hv a 22mth old boy who hardly wants to talk. Yet he can comprehend very well what we say or ask. He is in full day childcare but according to his teachers, they said whenever they teach/prompt him to say words, he can pronounce very well and accurately. Sigh…dunno why once back home he switches mode. At home he also likes to suck his pacifier. We suspect that is why up till now he hardly wanna say any words. We are trying to kick this habit of him but my child is very very strong willed and his cries can go on forever if we insist on not giving him his pacifier. Sigh…dunno what to do… -
I don’t think pacifier use affects speech. My boy and gal used the pacifier very often but they are chatterboxes. Sometimes, the kid doesn’t see the need to talk at home coz mommy and daddy can understand what he wants already with his gestures etc. Next time he wants something, get him to say it by giving him a choice and asking him to say the option out. You need to ask him more questions and wait for the answer before giving him what he wants. The key word here is "Wait".

Yeah that is what I always do - ask him what he wants and give him some choices. Coz he refuses to talk, so we also dunno what he wants exactly, then he gets frustrated with us for not understanding him…vicious cycle goes on…But given choices he also doesn’t wanna talk. Juxtaposition shake or nod head. Alamak!

The TV show Daddy 101 also has a case of the kid refusing to voice her wants. She was taught baby sign language when she was a baby and had grown dependent on that to get what she wants instead of turning to speech.
The child psychologist recommended lots of interactive play time together with the parents. The parents must keep yakking and yakking during the play time even if she does not want to talk. The parent can also sing out the request to get her response. You could try this method.

my youngest son was like that. has gor gor and jie jie... thought he will talk faster.. but he just do not speak until 36 months. my mom even kept on asking me bring him to doc, pd and specialist....Dear parents...

and after he's 3 yrs old he kept talking and then cannot get him to stop... :slapshead:

My DS1 didn’t speak a word until he was 26 months old, and he’s fine at P3. -
