So pls tell me - what's sooooo special abt alumni that they warrant unlimited entry criteria vs church n clan?

Very question....I also very interested to know.

For various individual opinions to that question, I look forward to your generous efforts to comb through the 131 pages and consolidate them in the your next post(s).

Still not satisfied with the possibly one-sided opinions?

Then .... for MOE's official Unbiased stand on this, please call / email them directly and post their reply in this forum - for the benefit of everyone here.

Cheers! Here's a tiger for your efforts.
      :celebrate:
Dear Lyddon,

Good try in trying to push the work to others to do. U must be part of 'mgmt' in your office.

However, as a fellow 'colleague' in the 'mgmt' league as well, do note that since this 'proposed priority change discussion - if any' does not affect me at all, i would say - go find another kah kia who will do your bidding.

In the meantime, guess vk2010 is correct - wasting too much ink here.

Since things are beneficial only to the 'connected' or the 'rich' - and so far - i seem to be on the right side of this fence - i shall just accept it - and too bad for fellow SGs then.

      Yours Sincerely,
      Vicki

Problem here is people only want to keep their alumni status if they are from a popular school And people only want to do away with the alumni status if they are not from a popular school.

        Hehe. Just my evening ramblings.
        All these are personal preference..

That's why, when tackling this issue, we must throw \"personal preference\" Out of the windows!

        And discuss based on merit..

Whether it is merit of welfare or merit of connection or merit of descent (if any)..

You can always check the price of resale flats in marine parade, ang mo kio and bishan (recently transacted more than $1 million for a mansionette?!?). A 3 room flat in these areas Easily fetches more than a 3 room flat elsewhere. Property agents have said before being near a good school fetches a 10 - 15% premium in prices. Why else do you think advertisements will include 'within 1km to xxx school'?
why mention \"mansionette\" if you're concerned about the average SC?

So what if the flat are more exp than elsewhere (assuming)? is there a cause for concern based on this alone?

Generally, If an average SC can afford 4rnm flat, they can afford 3rm flat if they want to, I believe.

For those staying there, they may not want to sell.

If kiasu parents can pay an arm and leg to buy a flat, kiasu grandparents can resist all temptations to sell their flat to preserve it for their grand off springs.. fair?

After many generations.. changes may happen.. and then, the school may be due to rebuild/relocate too..

The popular schools have unlimited supply of Kids wanting to enroll into the school. There is no need for them to \"need\" any priority from anyone.

On the other hand, it is the school OFFERING limited places, and it is the alumni begging for priority from the school.

            Anyway..

They take and they give, and squared out.. alumni connection is between the parents and the school, not their kids and the school.

            Why involve the next generation?

That is what I'm trying to say.

Regardless of whether you took or give, it is one generation's business. Unless you give but never take, then you talk about passing the debt/loan.

for those hyper active alumni.. they can talk about contributing more.. I have no issue with them asking for priority.. IF They deserve it, it is fine. But it shd not be a blanket priority that is accorded even to sleeping alumni.

            Lyddon:

Interesting how I can skew the words, also ..... :xedfingers:

Schools are the PRODUCT of the alumni. Schools benefited from alumni.

And bcoz schools are the product and they benefited from it, alumni's offspring should be accorded priority to further let schools benefit from alumni and possibly deprive another \"staying nearby\" of the chance?

            Schools contributed.. yes.

But they contribute as a way of paying back what they have TOOK from the Alumni ... by providing the standard education/syllabus that they have received from MOE to the students.

Schools took.. Alumni contributed, and Schools took it again from their Alumni's offspring.. and they take it again from their grand off spring.. and they take and take and take and take................................................

their schools may have contributed.. they may not have contributed more than the Alumni has given.. but even if they did not.. the alumni still gave ....

            :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I don’t think anyone will offer $2 million for a 23 year old HDB flat. My hubby hopes to move to Pinnacle…but I am not keen, even though the chances of getting balloted are very slim. It’s difficult to uproot especially when I have a flat with no complaints. Many of my neighbours have stayed here since this estate was built.

I like this. It shows that schools are immaterial. So, just congregate the children of alumni in any schools and they will make these schools 'good'. Then, we will have more and more good schools.

Hmm, MOE should seriously consider this.
If you want more good schools, get the kids of alumni of good school to join unpopular schools.. then you got chance of more good schools.

diversity don't occur when the same trails are passed down for generations within a closed group.

                  :celebrate:
If YOU YOURSELF bother to read ALL the posts from#1, you will realise I have been participating in this thread from the beginning. Therefore, do not pretend to act smart and try to brush off mine or Vicki's question. If you do not have any solid reason why alumni deserve priority over church or clan, its better to just keep mum.

Maybe I detest hypocrites who pepper their scarstic remarks with seemingly friendly phrases, if you do not mean it, please spare me the hypocrisy. Its not appreciated nor necessary. I usually ignore or delete such emails because it reflects the writer is either ignorant or trying to act smart. Waste of time....

                    chamonix:

MOE can always have certain criteria on distance. Priority to 'good' schools can be given to those who have been living there for more than 7 years. Those who stayed/rented there for less than 5 years will enjoy no special treatment.

For alumni, same thing. Those who have contributed for a long time with no self interest truly deserve a seat for their children. For those who have done nothing much since they graduated or contributed only after having children will not get to enjoy any special treatment.
Fair enough.. the number of years maybe up for debate, just like measurement of \"contribution\".. but the general idea is good....

                    *Like* 😉
