Hi caring dad, my ds have decided to give up his co for dhs in favor of going for S1 result to his preferred school..... While for me is not an easy decision as this co is worth 256 points after all if we use last year cop as a reference as well as forgoing another offer, we are supportive of his decision. However in the leadup to this decision, we insisted that he consulted his school teachers as well (and they were supportive as well).... While he is not exactly in love with chinese, his main issue is inconsistency; however we do see his point that at least he have a try at his 1st choice, even if in the end there is a possibility that he may not get it. This is just to share with you as we also spent days thinking over this.....

        Hi Dreamgear,
Today is the last day to decide on the choice. Presume you have a CO but going to let go and just wait for S1.
There are people who let go of CO from RI HCI and NYGH for DHS. There is no regret even they have to travel the distance. Imagine the happy 6 years with good resources from around sincere peers and teachers.
Hope you get to see this before 12nn today as the dateline for submission.

        hi dreamgear,
thanks for sharing. as parents, it has been hard to decide, after consulting with one dunmanian about the pros and cons, and considering ds persistence to pursue his prefered school, we concluded to let go the chance. 1hr to go, nothing right or wrong ... moves on..

Hi Soka, thanks for your very sound advice. I would rank dhs up there together with the other mentioned schools…thus decision have little to do with the prestige aspect… My ds did a search on the programme offered by the various schools, and i must admit that some of the schools do package and articulate their programmes very well, like artscience, integrated humanities, etc… I thought its due to the difference in funding for an independence school vis-a-vis autonomous school… However the njc open house was an eye opener and the programmes are well thought through, and all this on an autonomous school funding…dhs focus is very much on academic vigour, we just feel that the development aspect is some what lacking…perhaps the most important factor is my ds is not comfortable in the school, and thats where the happiness aspect comes in…

Dhs is a great school with a great history and the status of the largest secondary school in singapore… Maybe just not fated this time round…

I dont agree that DHS focus much on academics rigour, and lacks of other developments.....
The sch emphasis much on moral values, characters development and also cultural values....
such values are inculcated every now and then , eg in assembly, by subj teachers and during CME lessons.....

Apart fr the main academics subjects.....
DHS's curriculum includes ACC ( appreciation of chinese culture) which u dont find it in a non-SAP sch.
It is an enriching and a wholesome learning experience to have hands on on
Chinese Tea brewing and appreciation, Chinese painting and calligraphy... etc

Others such as Lifeskills prog (for y1 and yr2) focus on teaching of practical life skills that range fr cookery, nutrition, sewing, personal grooming and etiquette.

In yr 3, pupils are exposed to ACE (Active Citizenry Education)....
where they are engaged in decisions making and think critically their roles, participation and responsibilities in society.
And in yr 4, ACE will focus on globilisation and encourages students to explore regional n global issues....

To me,it 's a quite a well rounded education.....but to each his own....
Yes, most impt is that yr child feels comfortable with the sch that he chooses,
afterall he is the one studying there, spending 6 yrs of their youth there...... All the best .........

Hi,im a p6 student and have applied for dhs dsa.I am now on the waiting list and will have a 50/50 chance of getting into dhs if i list dhs as one of my preferred schools.I am good in all my subjects except chinese. Can i survive in dhs if i get in?

Not too worry lah....not every1 in DHS are good in Chinese lang....
The sch promo criteria does not based on HCL alone.....
It is based on overall GPA and at least a C in Lang Arts. ( note is Lang Arts not HCL).
But still, have to put in effort to obtain a decent grade as not to affect yr overall GPA....

To those pupils or parents who are concern abt DHS HCL.....
esp when comes to decisions making for S1 postings,
the above may give u some indication......
of coz, pupils themselves mustnt hate CL lang in the first place.....

I am an DHS Alumnus and my DS is a current Dunmanian. Regarding issue about HCL, my views are:

                  1. Given there is no pure Chinese Primary school now, the general level of CL for most students are fairly similar, especially if they can score 250+. So dont worry too much about coping.

                  2. SAP school nowadays is not much different from other schools in term o language usage. Students in DHS converse mostly in English.

                  3. China has became the world's 2nd largest country in term of GDP. There is economic impetus (in addition to cultural) to learn HCL.

All schools have pros and cons. Choosing a school is a personal matter. Many children would have a dream school when they are in P5. I have a niece on WL for DHS. Wish it will become a CO 😄

I would like to compliment the teachers in DHS.

It was raining cats and dogs just before the A Level paper this afternoon. Though I drove my girl to school, I was worried for those who were taking public transport. After the paper, my girl told me that some teachers actually went to the bus stop and waited for these students with umbrella. It was such a warm and touching act. Good job and thank you, DHS teachers!
