RE: Higher Chinese in P5 - To opt or not
Thanks for your reply. I am still confused. Does it mean that even you fail higher Chinese but you are in the top 10% in the PSLE cohort, you can still take higher Chinese or you will have to take an entrance test?

RE: Higher Chinese in P5 - To opt or not
Just to share, my dd’s Chinese teacher told me that if the child fails her HCL in her PSLE, she will not have a chance to take HCL in her secondary school, but if a child did not take higher chinese but get good grades for her PSLE, she still will get a chance to offer higher Chinese in secondary school. Is this true?

RE: Han Language Centre - Discussion
Hi Mr Ding,
I have not visited this thread for quite sometime. Sorry did not reply to your queries. For teachers quality, most of the teachers are china teachers , and they speak very good mandarin. For the material quality, I do not have any other Chinese enrichment to compare , but the materials follow closely with school syllabus. The service of the staff there are very good too but I am not sure of other centers. They also allow your child to sit in to another class if you miss your regular class. The fees are reasonable too. For your info, both my children are still with them. My dd surprisely still score very well in her school exams. But her Han teacher ever told me that my dd standard in her class was only average and she was surprised that she can scored very well in her school exams. I think I will still continue to put my children in Han unless their grades drop. -
RE: Advice needed! Feeling cold during swimming lessons
MummyThreeStreams:
My boys get cold too. The life racer thermal doesn't help! Maybe I'll try hot Milo next time.
Just to share what my kids' swimming coach used to advise me on the life racer thermal. He said when buy the thermal, buy the exact size. If you buy slightly bigger, it will not be so fitting, thus the effects will not be so good. Normally for us parents, we will tend to buy bigger size for our kids cos they outgrow very fast, but for the life racer thermal, it is supposed to be fitting, so if too big, water can easily go in and it will makes them feel cold. -

Hi isabella.zola,
Hi nmhum,nmhmum:
Hi isabella.zola,
The reason why I say Han is not so good because I realised that my daughter relies alot on han yu pin yin to recognise words and if those words do not have any han yu pin yin on it, she will have difficulty reading the chinese words. I have put her in Han for almost 2 years there and actually I expect that she should at least know how to read the words without the help of Han Yu Pin Yin, but she still have difficulties in recogising words. Furthermore, she told me of all the subjects, she hates Chinese the most. I assume that a good tuition centre should actually makes the child likes the subject but not hate it. But strange is that my daughter can perform very well in her exams and not only that, she is put in the 2nd best class for her Chinese. :?
Oh that is quite strange maybe they make her learn by hard quite a lot so she does not like it but can do well? But I think it is important for a child to enjoy the subject. Are you planning to switch centres or stay?
I think I will still try out Han since my daughter's results is still good. However, if her school tests and exams results drop, then I will plan to switch to a new one.

Hi nmhmum,
Could you give more details on why you do not find Han good? I am not a Chinese but my husband is and we want our kids to take up Chinese. So I am really looking for a centre that will help a child who does not have much exposure to Chinese. My child not in P1 yet.

Hi nmhmum,
Juz wonder what level is your girl. My son is P4 now and been studying there for 2 years. He started with poor Chinses grade and hate chinese but now he's doing very well in paper 2. So far, he didn't need Han Yu Pin Yin to read chinese words. In Han's worksheet, only new words were given Han Yu Pin Yin for them to pronounce correctly.
The only problem for my son is his composition, he manage to get a passing mark only and this drag his overall mark down to band 2 for chinese (he scored almost full mark for his paper 2). Ever talked to his teacher, she suggest to get him read more chinese books and sign up the holiday composition class.[/quote]Hi catddy2002,
My girl is in P2 this year. I know that the first two years, they have more han yu pin yin to help them, after that will be more words without the aid of Han Yu Pin yin. That is the part I am more worrying. Anyway, I will see how its goes too. If her grades does not drop, I will continue to put her in Han. By the way, I heard that there are different standards in different centres? Which centre did you put your son in?
