• RE: Small fish in big pond or big fish in small pond?

Snow Crystal:
For me, it depends on character, personality, adaptability and EQ of my child.

Some kids can thrive as small fish in big pond, gradually gaining size and become big fish in big pond. As a small fish, they are not afraid of the big fish, they find their own place in the big pond and grow. This type of kid when placed in a good class or top school is confident of himself and is not affected by others who are much cleverer than them. In fact they enjoy being with their smarter classmates.

On the other hand, another type of kid can never survive in a good class or top sec Sch. He is afraid - so afraid when he learns with much smarter classmates that he loses confidence in himself, he wonders why he never aces the tests when he was so good last time, he still lives in past glory, he's tired of swimming so hard in the big pond, his grades slide and he may be better off as a big fish in small pond.

Any big fish in small pond will ultimately still have to swim and upgrade into a big pond one day. He won't and can't stay forever in a small pond. So the test is earlier or later, matter of time.

At a younger age eg primary school and secondary school, i prefer my kids to be a comfortable fish in whichever size pond ie he does not feel small or bad about himself and learn in a condusive environment with a reasonably high self esteem.

I focus more on the final destination - the great seas. I hope that in the final seas which my kid sails to, he will finally find his own placing with good confidence. Meanwhile during the journey from pond to sea, I hope he will not be swallowed by the ugly creatures called 'Demoralisation', 'Depression' and 'Lost Confidence'. It's a long journey from pond to sea so I want to remind myself to strike a balance in every stage of his education life. What if our kid is big fish all the way then become a tiny fish at the most important final stage when they meet the other foreign, more aggressive and smarter fishes of which 45% obtain second upper honors and above. Then at that stage do we regret and say, 'I wish I had not deprived your childhood. I should have just let you go out play more and watch that movie you have wanted to watch.....'

AGREE! :goodpost:
Poor kids!!!Why make life so difficult for them!!

who ever set this kind of maths questions need to reflect!!! Is it nesscessary??

the so called 'challenging' questions to further 'push' our kids to 'think out of the box' :siao:
understandable why kids are so stressed nowasdays

So at P1, the kids language skills and analytical skills have to be honed. If not, catch no ball.
By doing so, does it make our kids smarter?
Today's kids are the test bed of MOE’s experimentation system to excel.

i think a matter of time parents would need to seek treatment in IMH as well!!!! esp those having kid doing PSLE!!

• RE: River Valley Primary

Yes they are taking too long to make the name tag!!! it is more than 3 months!!!!

you may call Angeline @ 9090 7938 from the book shop to chase.
whenever i call, she always say it will be ready next week but it never happened!!!
i have feedback to Mr. Ang from the school admin dept. you may want to do so!

shandee:
have anyone received the name tag for P1? was told by the sch bookshop tat they wld inform parents when ready for collection....but till now i hv not heard fr sch bookshop

its odd that it takes so long to have the name tag made....i wld think that students shld hv the name tag when sch starts, this way teachers & classmates would know the names of students/ classmates

• RE: Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)

I am not an expert in choosing chinese enrichment centre. it is all based on feedback from parents and my own opinion and also how my son 's adapt to the programme.

which two centres centre are you referring to?

mr_ding:
Hi Truffle, thanks for the info! Seems like you are very experienced when it comes to choosing Chinese enrichment. I am just curious , would you care to share how these two centres compare (out for 5 stars) according to the following criteria?

a) Teacher Quality
b) Material Quality
c) Centre Service
d) Location
e) Value for Money

I am trying to compile a comparison list like this and share with all kiasu parents at kiasuparents. 🙂

In my opinion, Berries and EduPlus are better for kindergarten to lower primary! My son has been with EduPlus since k1. Their methods make learning fun and effective!
As for Tien Hsia, their materials and programme are more academic driven and comprehensive! Again, it depends on individual kid's needs!
My son is taking higher Chinese in P4 this year so I am giving tien hsia a try to see how it works out for him!
truffle,
Do you know the difference between berries and tien hsia for upper primary? Does tien hsia have higher std than berries? Thanks.

• RE: Comparing English Enrichment Programmes

Hi Joe,

I've just emailed you requesting for your kids tuitor's contact.

Can you please reply.

Thanks so much

averagejoe:
My colleague recommend me to send my P2 girl and P5 boy for English classes in Holland Village. Classes are run by a former teacher at her home in small groups of 6. She also teaches Creative writing. My son's English grade improved greatly and most of all he actually enjoys writing! I was put on the waiting list for 2 months before my daughter can join her classes. The teacher used to teach in a top primary school and she's friendly, professional and good with kids. I can pass you her contact if you like.

Joe 😎
