I am not sure if you are aware of the new GPA system in RI. RI restructure their GPA calculation so that a bad third language result will not affect the GPA. It will be affected unless our son did badly on a few subjects.
Thanks Kiasuson! Being a 1st time Sec level Mum, I m still need :?: on wat's going on :stupid: -
Hi All,
Anyone know if there is any benefit for taking higher chinese in secondary school ? Very Curious :?
Lately, I come across many cases of parents who told me that their kids will be taking higher chinese :!:
I am rather surprised as these kids were not taking higher chinese in their primary school. I am just wondering if there is any benefit in doing so, won't these kids be at higher risk of failing their chinese subject ? Or is there any hidden benefit which some of us may not know
I only know that taking higher chinese will benefit those taking 'o' level as they can deduct 2 points if they pass the higher chinese. But for IP programs, there is no 'o' level so why go through the trouble and suffer ?
Anyone here knows why ??

for some schools, higher chinese is a must as there isn't \"normal chinese avail\"
just like DHS, every1 has to take HCL (there isn't any CL textbooks listed in the booklist).
fr what i know, if the pupil has a pass in HCL at \"O level exam\" (meaning at yr 4).
he/she need not to take CL in yr 5 and 6. (correct me if i'm wrong). -
edanson:
One of the requirements for ''A\" level is to take H1 MTL as a subject. However, if you obtained D7 or better in HMT at the \"O\" level, you would have deemed to have fulfilled the H1 MTL requirement and hence you have less one subject to take for \"A\" level. This means more time for other subjects.Hi All,

Hope the above helps. -
So I see.
Thank you JustKP and Augmum. :thankyou: -
One more consideration, edanson: If the child is very good with chinese, he can continue to take it at A levels and have it included for admission to local Unis.

Hi,
My son did MEP in RI. He enjoyed it very much, though the master classes can make him fall asleep. On the whole, he liked it quite a bit compared to other courses in the school. He particularly enjoyed the listening log part and he actually enjoyed the assignments!
