I'm going to be a Year 1 Girl next year. Yes, I was disappointed that the Principal had told us that we wouldn't be able to enjoy the facilities of the new campus during our time in RGS as a student.
In the RGS website, it had been stated that the new campus would be moved-into in 2018, and thus I had had hope that we would at least be able to spend one year of our time in the new campus, because the current campus is a bit old and the thought of being the first batch to move into the new campus was really exciting.
I have one unclear thought, though. In Mrs Poh Mun See's speech, she had said that we would only be moving to the new campus in 2019, and she had said that the parents need not worry that their daughters' studies will be disrupted during the move to the new campus. Perhaps she thinks that the parents don't want their daughters to move campus, and has thus extended the construction period by one year? O.o I don't know if I'm thinking too deeply about this, but perhaps if Mrs Poh mentions this thought again, I can try to politely let her know that most of the Girls would like to experience the new campus before moving to Raffles Junior College. We'll just see how everything turns out.
There is also the possibility that she is stating 2019 as an overestimated figure so that the parents will not expect the Girls to be able to move to the new campus at all, and then she'll be able to surprise us if the construction and fund-raising turns out to be completed by 2018?
I dunno. It's a far-fetched idea, but a girl can hope.

But why so saddened by this one small fact? Your seniors don't get to use it either, and still have to fund raise for the campus they never get to use. And now we won't have a physical site to remember our school days anymore. There will be no memory of us there. If you want to talk about missing out opportunities... i assure you your seniors will have loads more stories to tell. No RGS 1:1, no RICE, FAM in hall rather than hotel, no new campus. We have survived pretty well without all that, and it may be actually a lot better than you think.
Some batches just have to sacrifice for a better future. That's what the school told us when we complained bitterly that our batch was missing out on too many things.
Why not just focus on settling into the school for now? -

I guess you're right. Our seniors probably had it a lot worse. I'm sorry for complaining when my batch already gets to experience some things that you guys didn't - I shouldn't complain at all. We're already a very lucky bunch.

After you mentioned it, I realised that although we may not get to experience the new campus in its entirety, our batch is fortunate in the way that we get to immerse ourselves in the home that RGS has had since... 1959, I think? In all of the 50+ years that RGS Girls have been studying hard and playing hard in the current campus, a lot of laughter and happiness has been collected in the school halls, and I'm glad that, along with our seniors, we got to be in a campus that had collected that many fond memories. Plus... My batch and the seniors' batches got to spend the entirety of their four years here, and if you look at it another way, it's a priceless privilege. We got to stay in this campus for four years, we got to show it our love for four years, and even though we can always visit the new campus as alumni later, the new students will never be able to come back to the school and see it in all its vibrancy. To all of the 2015 Year 1s, you're the last batch who gets to experience that.
So that's what I realised when I read through Choco05's reply. It makes me feel a whole lot happier about the new campus. Thankiew, again, Choco05 - first you helped me to get my inspiration to come to RGS, and then you helped me to learn to love it, even before I started schooling there. You're one awesome person.
So yesh. I probably made all of your eyes sore but that's what I took away from this. 2015 Year 1s, I hope we have a great year ahead!

For the upcoming Orientation camp, will you equipped your DD with sleeping bag? I know its optional, just want to know the thought of majority.
And also, do you think a normal haversack bag or a cabin luggage bag, more suitable for that?

My dd will be bringing a sleeping bag and a slightly bigger backpack. Do they need to bring a lot of stuff? We went shopping yesterday for food so that she can share with her new friends during the camp. I think the food will take up more space in the bag. Btw just out of curiosity, which classes are the geppers placed in? Previously it was 109-113 from the info I gathered in this thread, but this year it seems to include 108. -
Geppers are in Class 108 to 113.
Total of 6 classes.
For Camping, likely to bring cabin bag as there’s quite a no of stuff to bring. The items are sleeping bag, bath towel, slipper plus 2 PE shirts and shorts, one set of sch attire, long pant for sleeping since they are sleeping in aircon classroom. Snacks as well. Long list indeed. -
Any mainstream students joining Geppers classes? Will their learning/work load be different from the other classes?
