Hi all, not trying to be a hypocrite here but I would like to enquire about some matters before sending my daughter to dunman high.

For one, my niece has just graduated from Dunman High and although some teachers have been a great help, there are some who truly have wasted her time during lessons. In the Senior High programme in Dunman High, there are often complaints of the less than average economic teachers who are unsure of the syllables that would teach you in JC1, before moving on to JC2 where you would finally able to get proper teachers. Is this the case for Dunman High's senior high programme.

Next, over the years, there have been a large number of good teachers leaving Dunman High for other schools/going back to HQ because Dunman High is no longer good. Has this been a trend throughout the years?

Following that, is it true that opportunities such as research opportunities are only shared within a specific group of students and these opportunities are not given or even revealed to the \"mediocre\" students?

Lastly, why is the school standards dropping so rapidly in PSLE cut off point?
Adding to what Louis had said....

Any JCs or principals of the schs, not limit to DHS, with logical minds would certainly like to allocate the better teachers for JC2...there's nothing wrong with that...

As for my gal (last yr, Yr 5) ...she said she had a good econ teacher for Yr 5, who is approachable, patient n clear...even during consultations ...

Yes, some teachers left becos they were invited to join MOE HQ...while some teachers left for overseas further studies...

Regarding yr last question linking DHS std with the drop of COP....please also look at the overall picture of other sec schs COP before u make this remark...
Are we gona to say that RI standard has dropped becos the sch COP from last yr 259 dropped to 256 this yr??
There are other factors which caused the drop of COP of a sch...

As for this yr, the top pupil's agg T- score of many popular pri schs were lower compared to previous yrs...
But can we conclude anything from here ? Are we going to say that all these pri schs std have dropped ? Definitely No !!!

What i want to say is...as a parent, choose a suitable, best-fit sec sch for your child...
If u already hv negative thoughts....no confidence with the sch n the teachers there...having doubts here n there, it's better to give the sch a miss then...
There are still many other sec schs to choose from....

Lastly, why is the school standards dropping so rapidly in PSLE cut off point?
Hi, I would like to address the last point as well. This year top 10% cut off is at 249, on average the whole cohort dropped and that explain why mostly the cut off point for the top popular schools dropped. In actual fact, those popular neighbourhood schools also dropped. If your child took the psle in year 2014,you should have notice the trend.
Whether a secondary school can perform anot should not be determined by the entry of Tscore, it should be the end result which is A level. Again, whether a child can do well in his/her study depends on teachers, child, parents. I believe it takes two hands to clap and work hand in hand together.
Do not send yr child to a school just because if it's popularity . Understand yr child and find out if the school culture, environment and curriculum suits him/her.
Lastly,if you do not have faith in that dunman high, then I think you should choose another school which you deemed it's good.

Just to add my 2cts worth -

NO SCHOOL IS A PERFECT SCHOOL, only GOOD.

Are you aware that DHS has one of the top scores for PW n HMT?

Do you know that DHS is now 'unofficially' ranked as one of the top 5 JCs (surpassing some of the long established JCs)?

The concerns that you mentioned - are you sure they don't exist in elite/top schools as well? It may not be no good Econ teachers, it could be other subjects. Did you get to hear of 'inside stories' of any schools that are not shared in public?

My dd is in Y6 this year n she tells me that the Econs teachers are dedicated/good n not some \"half-past six\" standard.

Do you think MOE will send some mediocre teachers to teach in one of the best IP schools?

The movement of teachers is a very common trend amongst ALL schools n not just solely DHS.

Likewise, for research opportunities - all students are given equal opportunities to apply. DHS, like all other schools, function in the same way. They DO NOT practise double standards.

It will be good if you can take time n read through all the threads before posting such questions in DHS thread. Your concerns come across as totally irrelevant when DHS is functioning in the same manner as all other IP schools.

Lastly, you have already formed a negative perception of DHS. Although we may clear your doubts, nevertheless, the mind is set based on what you hear from those who don't like DHS.

Not everyone fits into DHS. Its more important that you find a school culture that your child feels comfortable in. Its doesn't do any good just to gather information becos everyone has a different opinion.

More importantly is whether your child is happy n wants to make the best of her secondary/jc life regardless of which school she goes to.

This is my humble opinion n if I have offended you, my apologies.

          Have a good weekend!!!

          😄

              Hi,

A troubled mummy seeking for advice here. My DD is year 4 this year and she wants to transfer class because she really don’t like her classmates in her current class. She doesn’t like their attitude towards studies and that bothers her a lot as she was always the one working hard in projects and the rest of the members will drag her overall project grades down no matter how hard she worked every time. Not only that, her teachers are spending more time trying to lecture the class rather than teaching. I tell her to just mind her own business in Year 3 but she really can’t stand it as it is affecting her academic wise and also social relationship wise as she is always the one alone in class. She couldn’t find any good study partners and have to study every thing on her own. Seeking advice from all mummies and students, what should I do to help my DD? Should I speak to the level head as the level head and year head knows what is happening in my DD’s class so it won’t really help much? Thank you all

Not every subject is examined or tested as a group project all the time I guess ?

Did you feedback during meet the parents sessions which I am sure there are ?

Suggest u email to make an arrangement to speak to the teacher- in- charge of the projects...
Bring out the problems yr DD faces with her project mates...
( but this is a new academic yr, she may not meet the same project mates)...

I had the same problem regarding slacking project mates when my gal was in lower Sec ...
I spoke to the RS teacher....abt the 2 boys in her grp ...they were uncooperative, not able to be present for meetings scheduled, produced sub- std work ....
In the end, my gal ( together with another) were the ones who did most of the work ...
Much time was wasted becos she had to do the heavy editing of final submission due to the work produced by the 2 boys...

Sometimes, it needs some luck to get good, competent project teammates ....
Thankfully, her last yr, PW teammates were excellent...she said best of all yrs.... :please:

If there are other reasons where yr DD wanna to change class besides her project teammates....
Pls make an arrangement to see the level head to discuss abt it...see what she/ he can do to assist yr DD...

All the best to yr DD....

Econs is quite a tough subject to handle. My guess is that in year 1, you are still going through the basic contents in micro. Besides, it will never be in the curriculum to teach how to tackle questions and if the teacher does it, it will be just before the A levels. My understanding is that this is the norm even in HCI and RI. Students are left to sink usually in the first year unless you get the help of the tuition agencies.

Students are left to \"sink\" on their own in every school every subject unless the students take an interest to ensure he/she understand the stuff and cope. Making appointments to consult teachers is a norm. Not every one goes for tuition.

Please don't expect hand holding and spoon feeding once out of PSLE
