* Nanyang JC (NYJC)

I am not active in the forum but this post is a good reference for parents whose children are taking the O levels and cannot decide just yet on the choice of JCs when the time comes. It kinda summarises the thoughts of current JC parents including myself. When I told my circle of friends that my child is in NYJC, they were surprised to know that she is not in RI or VJ after scoring 8A1s. \"Oh, why not VJ or RI\" were their first reactions, mostly! How I wish she would go RI too was my reply
Instead of convincing my child to go RI (my points below), she managed to convince me instead
My \"debate\" was :
>If you choose NY for it's close proximity(Lorong Chuan), RI is JUST ONE MORE station away at Bishan! Not much difference ma....
(We are from Circle line, MacPherson btw)
>RI is a brand and branding is important! For example, if you are seated beside a RI student who may be a 3 pointer, if not 2. People will still presume she is \"smarter\" and had better O results than you even though you are a 2 pointer from another JC.
>Your friends who are 3 pointers are going there, why not you?
> You worked hard for your O level to get good results and with good results, you should go to RI or VJ and the schools are not too far away too.
My girl's reply :
>NY is the closest to our house and it is the only JC that starts an hour or even later, I prefer to get another hour of sleep. The school has 4 dress-down days, I prefer that to wearing full u.
>Yes, RI is a brand, but I still prefer to have a school with chinese culture(my girl is from a chinese secondary school, that's why) Mum, why do you care about what others think? Who cares whether I am a 2 pointer and that I should go RI? (In my mind, I was like... aiyo, I care leh ęč¦é¢åå)
haha..
>Who says 2 pointers must go RI. I have about several school mates who are also 2 pointers. :slapshead:
>I studied hard not just to get into RI. Mum, can you stop being such an ego?? :gloomy:
Wa biang, no choice... How I wish I can say RI when friends ask where my child is studying at now, hehe(my ego is acting up). Anyway, her choice seems quite logical now that I think about it. After walking my 7-year old to school at 7.15am, I can come home and still prepare a good breakfast for her before she leaves the house at 7.55am. She reaches her school at around 8.15am.
As a parent, I would still go for the popular schools if I were the decision maker. :rahrah:
Anyway, after PSLE, I made the decision for her to go through Os instead of taking the IP path...so at 16, I let her make the final decision.
She filled in only 3 choices instead of 12 on the JAE form so I knew she has already decided on the options.
Another bigger and more important decision comes after these 2 years of JC, local or overseas Uni.

Perhaps you may have overlooked my bolded \"main\" word.
NYJC rejects aren't just from RI and HCI only but VJC and NJC as well. I think it is not gracious of you to post the rejects of other JCs as well. Morever, some chose the JCs based on their comfort zone, proximity to home, etc and not all are rejects but have chosen the JCs as their first choice.blurblob11:

Yes, we have to see whether NYJC can sustain its low cut-off point. Most students indeed come from Nan Chiau HIgh School. Chung Cheng High School (Main), Anderson Secondary School, Maris Stella High School, Catholic High School. Notice that 4 out of 5 of these schools are Chinese schools, so expect some Chinese culture ingrained in them. While I agree that students in NYJC could be a reject of RI, HCI etc, it is the same for all JCs. Take a look below:
Main students in the respective junior colleges
NJC: Rejects of RI, HCI
NYJC: Rejects of RI, HCI
TJC: Rejects of VJC, NYJC
MJC: Rejects of TJC and SAJC
SRJC: Rejects of SAJC
TPJC: Rejects of SRJC
IJC: Rejects of ALL JCs
You are right, because NYJC has the Chinese Language Elective Programme, it makes NYJC distinctive from other JCs that do not offer this programme.
Yes, EJC is coming up and students will be readily checking it out. Hope to see more interesting things from EJC. I went to the Eunoia Junior College Outreach Event. I must say, I have a good feeling about EJC.
Let me explain why I did not mention NJC and VJC but rather RI and HCI.
RI is rather close to NYJC, it is located at bishan area. jetsetter has also said that students who couldn't make it to RI will look for the nearest JC in their vicinity, which is NYJC.
HCI was chosen too, admitting the fact that they do offer CLEP. HCI is a Chinese school, so is NYJC. So, those who wanted to pursue CLEP in HCI may be rejected and hence, chose NYJC as a substitute. Or students who want the Chinese culture but got rejected by HCI, will most likely end up in NYJC.
VJC was not chosen because they are too far apart. If you say it is close and convenient, do you know that many 2 pointers who are more than eligible to enter RI chose VJC instead? And since NYJC is closer to VJC as compared to RI, it certainly does not make sense that NYJC comprises of rejects from VJC.
NJC was not chosen because the main students who are in NYJC are not MAINLY rejects of NJC.
I do not do that for fun or to bring down other JCs.
I think it is not gracious of others to imply that only NYJCians are rejects of RI (jetsetter).
I agree with you that not all of the students are rejects but have chosen the respective JC as their 1st choice. This applies to ALL JCs.[/quote] -
Thanks for sharing, HappyFreeMama. May I ask why your dd didn't consider HCI? It has a Chinese culture and starts school late on some days too.

Non-conformity is rather refreshing. Thanks for sharing!

Actually, EJC has 4 dress-down days too where the students can come in their polos and berms. Only on Mon do they need to come in full uniform.
Bear in mind that if the college starts later, it will end later too and the child will come back to home very much later.
EJC starts at 8pm ( which I think is quite a good time) and there are chartered buses at major mrt stations ( eg Bishan, Serangoon e.t.c) to fetch the student direct from MRT station to JC. It sure saves a long on travelling time. -

Dont assume college starts later and will end very much later too. No substantial fact about it. Dont assume.
Between 8 am to 8.30am, not very much difference in timing. -
Grandyma:
I am just citing an example that it is common now for JCs to have dressed down days and late start. As I know EJC well, I cited it as an example. Janet did allude to the fact that HCI also start late on certain days .Do you need to be so vexatious?

Not too sure what you mean by no difference in 8am and 830am. Fact is, the JCs have a fixed syllabus to complete. you start later, you have to end later.
And if you are afraid that mentioning EJC here may \"siphon\" away potential students to NYJC ( which I think is a ridiculous assertion), please rest assured. I think the goals of EJC are set way much higher than just competing with the likes of NJYC. -
mindays:
Do other JCs also encourages their students to take 3H2 and 1H1 only ? If I am not wrong, the IPJCs do expect their students to take 4H2, unless they are unable to cope in one way or another.
. You are right on the point that NYJC encourages students to take 3h2 and 1h1 -

But you mentioned about NYJC starts later and will 'end very much later'. Then you mentioned that EJC 8am starting time (you think) is quite a good time ( that's your view ). So you sing praise for EJC and downplay NYJC starting time.
There is no need to pass such comment. You said something and yet have another meaning.
In your latest post, Now you mentioned college will 'end later'. Your previous post was 'very much later'. Changed your words often.
Don't Assume.
Nobody here is afraid EJC 'siphon' students. Dont Assume again.
Just that, the news about EJC you posted showed you are hard selling EJC.
Whatever you think the high goals EJC set,
post in EJC forum.
Just dont assume. -

This truly sounds like SRJC, students wear berms and polo to school. Indeed the culture brought from SR to EJ by the principal.Actually, EJC has 4 dress-down days too where the students can come in their polos and berms. Only on Mon do they need to come in full uniform.
Bear in mind that if the college starts later, it will end later too and the child will come back to home very much later.

What is your point of bringing up \"EJC starts at 8pm \" (btw I presume you mean 8am instead of 8am, because I don't think EJ has night classes :rotflmao: )? Though the duration for each subject at H1, H2 and H3 levels are fixed by MOE, most students may have CCAs, twice or thrice a week, In the end, most students will see themselves going back at 7 to 8, no difference to whether lessons end early or late, on the basis that CCA starts at the regular evening period.
EJC has chartered buses? All the taxpayers' monies have gone to such use? Sighs
