the bully is a 10yo..I just wonder how big a bully he can be..

For such cases, I guess the first thing would be to inform form teacher, then school principal followed by asking to meet the bully's parents? change seat or change class? what else can we do yeah?

(The prosecutor) added that Tan could have escalated the matter to the discipline master, the principal or even to MOE, but instead attacked the boy.

I guess after you have gone through the chain of command and still, nothing gets done, you will be allowed to dress up as the Punisher.

Morale of the story, next time just go direct to MOE. Don’t bother going through the form teacher. So the P wasn’t informed? Why the form teacher did nothing for more than 2 years?

I recall DD had a (lower primary) classmate who had anger management issues, hurt another classmate who ended up in hospital.

Poor thing... Likely the dad who was jailed wasn’t too highly educated cos he would not feel at wits’ end to resort to push his kid’s bully and would probably sue teacher/classmate/MOE or use social media to highlight the issues.

The dad was an adjunct teacher, he should have known the venues open to him.
But he decided to take the bull by the horns, prob did not realise the bully had weak ribs

He's an adjunct teacher... I doubt \"wasn't too highly educated\" would be applicable to him. He probably lost it as would a lot of parents when it comes to things concerning their children.

In any case, here's a public announcement: if anyone's child is being bullied, please visit this website: https://bullyfree.sg (Bully-Free Programme @ Children's Society) for the necessary help. This is the proper channel.

I'd agree with peasants. Jmo, I'd advocate: (1) self-defense - let the bully know that the harassment/act is unpleasant for us; stay physically away from the bully; move in a crowd; etc (2) note down the frequency & type of harassment (3) most important of all, request that the school investigate, inform the bully's parents, counsel the child and remind the student population what constitutes bullying. I am the relentless parent who would sit at the school until the management budges, hence, so far things have worked out. Bullies are counselled, turn over a new leaf (at least whilst still being our classmates), even become a good classmate to us. I believe in the inherent good of all children, that they can and should be moulded into a socially responsible person. Depending on the type of harassment/incident, however, I may make an immediate escalation to the P.

Wonder why the prosecutor cited that he could have escalated the matter to the P. What has been the form teacher been doing for the past 2 years?

I once came across a parent who didn’t agree with the way her child’s teacher marked her child’s compo, got into an argument with the Tr and escalated such small matter to MOE HQ!

Surprised to hear that the dad was an adjunct teacher. Being part of the system, he should have known better. Why did he have to suffer in silence for 2 years?

I am wondering why labelling a child as ‘having anger management issues’ is like giving them the rights to go around bullying other people’s children. I won’t take such bullying lightly should it happen to my children.

Posting on social media, stating the school and how they condone that bully’s barbaric behaviours might get the school and MOE to jump into action immediately.

Precisely! If your child has anger management issues, it is your responsibility to send him for anger management counselling. My child or any other child should NOT be the sacrificial lamb for your child to vent his anger on.

If what the prosecutor said is true, I wonder why the primary school in question is in blissful ignorance of the bullying situation. Bullying took place on a daily basis for 2 years, the form teacher was informed and yet the bullying persisted. Such a situation could well happen to any parent and if there is no effective framework to address bullying issues, how can we entrust our children to the school.

What is most telling is MOE’s statement to distance itself from the poor adjunct teacher. I would think that the issue of persistent bullying should be of utmost concern and at the very least, MOE should acknowledge the existence of bullying in school and assure parents that they have a framework in place to detect bullying and support the victims. Sadly, MOE just turned a blind eye to this matter?

Minister Ong acted decisively for the NUS voyeurism case and I hope he would be just as decisive in recognising the need for a more effective framework to address the problem of bullying in schools.
