If you use the Gateway for checking in, it will tell you if the battery has run out (i.e. it won't beep). I use my token for entering the supermarket, and my office had just installed one (I haven't had a chance to to use that one, though).

Problem with the token design is that the battery is not rechargeable or user replaceable. Hence, once battery runs out, your only option is to do a one to one exchange at the CC.
I’m perpetually on the road. Hence, I use the token to tap in a minimum of 10 times everyday, probably that’s why it drains out the battery very fast. -
