Try this - - Ask the kid : do you think the answer will be a bigger or smaller number?

ie 5 is 1 less than ?. Is ? a bigger or smaller no? If big, then add.
ie ? is 1 less than 3. Is ? a bigger or smaller no? If small than subtract

        Hi all

I thought only my dd is confused with such statement…I am glad I am not alone as I am also having problem teaching her this sort of questions.

I think we have to move away with getting them to memorise steps or formula and make them understand concepts.

In my workplace which is very international, I see that the caucasians are alot better in their mental calculation than us, Chinese. Somehow, their mind process nos very differently!

I am going to try using "macrononi" to teach Math. I show her the logic of the question by demonstrating the answer using the macrononi and then, test her again with other similar questions and see if she gets the concept. On the other hand, I also feel that English plays a part! For those who have stronger English background, they tend to understand quicker.

Not sure I make sense here…anyone has better ideas, please share.

        JJ

          Dear Mmmouse,

I strongly agree with you, all these are english. Understand it and
          it will be easy.

Let her practice and practice, sure no problem. My son overcome this problem after I explained to him the meaning of these few words he is ok now.

Try to create more question for her to do.

If you use \"macoroni\" you must have full patience. When somrthing new is introduce to a kid, they will need time to adapt and understand it. As she is facing confusion by the maths, so make it easy for her.

Update us your teaching method. I can try out if it works. Hee Hee!!!

          :celebrate:
          Happy learning!!!

            Hi,

Anyone here know whether is working required or expected for Maths problem sums these days? Can just give answer without doing working? If answer correct but no working, will it still be a full score for the answer?

In addition, I need help on the WORKING for the following problem. Really hope someone here could help.

A shop sold oranges and apples packed as follow.
bag of 10 oranges. (A diagram is printed showing a bag with 10 oranges)
bag of 5 apples. (A diagram is printed showing a bag with 5 apples)
For every 10 oranges Madam Esah bought, she also bought 5 apples. She bought 20 oranges. How many bags of fruids did she buy altogether?
(Hint : Draw a diagram to help you solve)

Anyone know what is the kind of diagram expected for P2 Maths working for this kind of sum? My son can get the correct answer but just couldn't draw the digram. And I also can't help him either. Anyone here can help?

              Heyya usaik,

I usually just ask my kiddies to do all workings.
So in case the answer is written wrongly or carelessly
written wrongly, the diagrams, drawings or picture workings
will still carry marks for the questions. So rather than an ultimate
zero, there'll be some \"save\" marks for them. If the instructions
clearly states, please indicate working..... then definitely must include
lah but compulsory or not - that i'm not sure... Mebbe it varies between
schools? I find that a complete working also helps to show that the answer
was derived from her own train of thought and not glimpsed and copied
              from next-seated-neighbour...

If this question requires a diagram, (and a school question) - the textbook
would have shown the children (and parents) how the workings have been
introduced to the children to do in class. Mebbe you can ask him if the
teacher has done so and also flip his Maths Textbook..

As for the workings and diagrams, it could be ...

There can be other versions too.
If other parents can share, i'd love it too! :please:
Hope to learn from one another here, to help our kids better.
Thanks in advance and much appreciated. 😉

                Share with you this lobang
                if you haven't already known
                about it lah that is...

                http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=Pq1brSnr

A push-cart sales lady at Bt
                Panjang Plaza offered me...

                P2 : S$35.00 for 2 subjects
and if i came with another
                friend (ie. recommend)...
say friend's child is in P4,
                she'll get P4 : $45 for 3 subjects.

The schools' test papers are in
the leaflet given to me above..
Want to find out though... is this
                standard market price for test
papers or not? Cheaper or more
                expensive?

Oh ya, btw… was told by a friend that

such test papers got copyright laws…
Dunno to which extent the sale of
these test papers are legal… but
printed ones from Popular are the
                  safely compiled ones and allowed
                  sale?

Anyone has any thought on this…
                  Tks in advance.

I got my full-pack (4 subjects) for P4 at $50 at the Marine Parade \"permanent\" booth. I buy one set every year. To me, this is an essential purchase for all school children. I don't bother with other assessment books at all.

Anyway, the same set can be downloaded from the well-known misskoh.com for free. But you have to print them out yourself, which could add up to about the same cost.

just verbalizing it and imagining the workload
is tiring enough... oso later, not much time to
come here and chit chat with you all.. Heheh.. 😉

                        Hi Buds,

Thanks so much for sharing your working. (How did you do that really nice working {digram} and post on the forum?)

Wonder would you also know is there any difference on the following statements for stick B and stick C… I remember seeing them somewhere…but not in the same problem sum, but just put it into one example as below…

Stick A is 5 cm long.
Stick B is 2 times as long as stick A. How long is Stick B?
Stick C is 2 times longer than stick A. How long is Stick C?
