How can the system train/develop gifted children when the system is so rigid and flawed? I thought the the right thing to do is to accord the scores as though he had skipped one question and grade him accordingly :? ... Or rather an interview may be conducted to ascertain his understanding of the questions and what his answers were.He missed one question in the paper but didn't know until the end, so all his answers in the OAS (optical answer sheet) did not match the question number.

I think MOE has realized this as well. So the new initiative is to mix the \"high ability\" students with the GEP students in a class to do some subjects together. This only happens in the GEP primary schools. So selected students from the mainstream will get to do some higher order stuff with the GEP students.

[/quote]How did he knows his result?? :shock: The paper was not allow to take back and marks were also not review for both the 2 rounds. Parents with kid who got it through post question to the representative from the MOE. He wanted to know what is the score of his son before he made his decision whether to let his son to opt for the programe. Some parents there just wanted to know where their kid stands, the top 10% or the bottom 10% out of the 500+ kids being selected. When I was at the briefying, I discovered actually it was the parents themselves who were the kiasu ones. Already being selected into the programe, why matter the top or the bottom?? How bottom they can go, the most be the no. 500+ only. That what I alway tell my girl.

Well, he doesn't know. But he knew at the end of the test that he made that mistake. Probably it was his parents who have told him that if not for that mistake, he would likely to end up in the GEP

The first GEP screening focuses on Maths and English. Those who made it past the first round are probably top 6 - 8%. But not sure if this screening cater to those who are talented in areas other than Maths and English. -

Some parents believe that "gifted" can be trained. But being "gifted" has nothing to do with how hardworking you are.
I remember when I was young, I bought a Rubikโs Cube. I failed to solve the puzzle no matter how hard I tried for many months. But my older brother(only a teenager back then) solved it within one night. He has never played with the cube before. Some kids are simply born more gifted then others.
However, we must also remember that there are many kinds of "giftedness". Mozart is gifted in creating beautiful music. But was he very good in maths as well ? I donโt think so.
The problem with the gifted programme in Singapore, is that the educators seem to think that a gifted child can do every thing from maths and science to literature and poetry. I think that this is not the correct way to develop a gifted child.
