Can anyone help to advise, be it chinese or western medicine. Will it become ineffective if mixed into milk for my toddler girl?

She totally refuse to drink her medicine, be it chinese or western and I have to mix into her milk. But I heard from a shop assistant at EYS that it will become ineffective and no point taking the med liao.

Can anyone advise if it is true? if I dun mix into milk, there is no way my girl will take her medicine. :?:
Just to share what I did when my boys were babies/toddlers and had to take their medicine. No, I did not mix the medicine with the entire bottle of milk. What I did was to prepare the milk according to instructions and would transfer say about 50ml of the milk into another bottle and would then add the medicine to this 50ml of milk and feed that first.

This way, you can be sure that the correct dosage of medicine is taken in the event that the child is unable to finish that bottle of milk. After he has finished that 50ml, I would then give the remaining milk, so it's okay even it the child is unable to finish the remaining milk, as at least the part with the medicine has already been consumed.

Hope that helps.

sean wife:

Hi,

I also just asked my mum to help me get some dong chong cao for my kids who are prone to cough and flu since young (reason given by PD is allergy…). They have been taking singulair and zyrtec on a daily basis for about a year now. Hopefully the dong chong cao will help to reduce the dependence on western medicine…..we are asking the medical hall to grind the dong chong cao into powder, seems more convenient than boiling soup. This thing is so expensive now…anyone know of any cheap, good and reliable place to get this??

Is dong chong cao heaty?

I dare not give my daughter although I heard good things about it and my daughter has been prone to cold and cough since Jan. I have phobia cuz I very dependent on Brand's chicken essence with dong chong cao when I am busy with work (usually every other day only at most). Once, I kay kiang took consecutively for 3 days cuz a lot of work to do. On the 4th day, I was on high fever liao. So I dunno izzit my health no good, or the chicken essence, or is it the dong cong cao.
Advise pls. TIA.

For older kid who has cold and cough, drink small amount of fresh warm lemon water does help.

I used to mix western med with milk but often my DD cannot finish and it's no good cuz it means she didn't get the complete dose. What I started doing was I feed her water with spoon to ensure she has enough water intake in the day. This also gets her used to having me feed her water spoon by spoon and she does enjoy it as it's like a bonding for us. So now that she is used to me feeding her with water, I can start putting in medication in the water or give her a spoonful of the medications in the midst of feeding her water. At first a little difficult here and there, cuz she didn't like it when she suddenly tastes something different. But after a few trial and errors, she now quite ok esp if I can distract her with iPad which I usually very stingy about letting her play. Now with this method, I can even feed her with Chinese medicine (in powder form to mix with water ).

My girl will normally finish her entire bottle of milk, so she definitely get the complete dosage of medicine. So that means it is still effective in curing her flu and cough by mixing into milk, right? as long as she finished everything..

why i was told that medicine once mixed into milk, will be less effective?
😓

I shared about boiling apples or pears in water and drink the water, to cure common ailments.

I chanced upon the website on TCM and this is the recipe that I found which I thought is useful for those of you whose kids are having heaty cough.

Traditional Pear Compote
http://www.tcmworld.org/heal_with_tcm/cough/

Try making the following traditional recipe.

The essence of pear is cold and it travels to the Lung and Large Intestine meridians, cooling them down. The following recipe is very good for autumn coughs. If the cough is deep and accompanied by phlegm, a handful of almonds can be added to the recipe. Particularly effective are bitter almonds, also available at Asian food markets.

Ingredients
•6 pears (any variety), chopped
•1/3 cup of rock sugar candy (available at Asian food markets)
•1/4 cup of water
Directions
Place all ingredients in a 2-quart covered pot in a double boiler. (If you do not have a double boiler, place the covered pot containing the pears in another larger pot with several inches of water in it. The larger, outside pot is the one that comes into contact with the heat source.)

Double boil on low to medium heat for approximately 40 minutes until the pears are soft. Stir gently and serve warm in a bowl.

Frankly I believe in children drinking sufficient plain water daily. There is this gal (10 years old/ my neighbour) and she recently found that she is diabetic. How tragic! So young. If china barley works for your kid, then maybe it is better with less sugar. Less sweet, more water, better for health.

I totally agree.

I always give my DD plenty of water whenever I can. I kind of enjoy feeding her water with spoon when her hands are busy with toys or something. It helps bonding.

Since I was a kid, I will definitely fall sick if I drink a bit less water. I hate to see my daughter suffer like me.
It happened to mine too. She'd fall sick every month. Sick for a week, lose appetite for 2 weeks, well for another 2 and then ill again. Its so frequent that our family physician suggested the flu vaccine. Seems to work for frequency has reduced significantly.

mine even flu vaccine pd also dun suggest cos my son have sensitive airway.. 😞

Try to put him through some aerobic sports like swimming and jogging. They really help if you keep at it everyday. Help to build up resistance naturally.
I agree with Chief. Sports is important. My kids did gymnastics, soccer and swimming when they were 4 and above. We also go to the parks and do
outdoor activities. They do get the occasional flu but not as frequent as what I hear a lot of parents complain about. Also when they do get a flu, they recover quite fast. My family physician told me they are doing well for they have not taken any anti-biotics since birth. Sports is good, the physical exertion can get the blood circulating and all the qi inside have smooth flow. Besides, it's also good for their eyesight as they get to focus far when they do outdoor sports. I attribute my kids 6/6 eyesight to sports. They are in their preteen and teen now.

Also prevention is important. Keep their bodies alkalised. Be a bad host to
flu bugs buy taking more alkaline food. Fruits and vege are best. You can try juicing. During hot heaty months, I juice a lot of fruits and vege for my family. :celebrate:

has anyone tried an ioniser? My two girls aged 5 & 6 sleep in the same room and if one falls sick the other will catch it too as they sleep with the air conditioner on. A friend told me to put an ioniser in the room? Anyone wanna advise me on this? And which is a good brand to get?

Recently the flu bug is coming back and a lot of kids fall sick.

Last week, both my kids "took turn" and had bad throat/ lung infection.

My doctor advised:

1. To take Scott’s Cod liver oil (original favour is better) daily, to build up the immune system;

2. Exercise more. take up swimming to build up the lung;

3. Eat more fruits and green leaf veggie.Remember to drink more water too!

Wish all stay healthy especially during this exam period.

Cheers

Pink
