My son is in Sec 3 only, but I'm unclear as to what are H1 and H2 subjects. Could someone help clarify?

      I quote:
\"In 2006, a new A-Level curriculum was introduced in the Junior Colleges and Centralised Institute. Since breadth of learning and flexibility are key elements in the revised syllabus, it is important that the A-Level examination changes in tandem to support that breadth and flexibility. To this end, the Ministry of Education, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board worked together to redesign the examination so that subjects can be taken at three levels: H1, H2 and H3.

H2 is equivalent to the previous Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level subjects in terms of academic demand and rigour. An H1 subject has about half the content of H2, but the content would be studied to the same depth as it is at H2. An H3 subject, which is an extension of an H2 subject, entails an in-depth study of a particular area that the student has the ability for and a passionate interest in. For instance, an H3 subject could involve the study of more advanced content of an existing area of the H2 curriculum, or it could be a research essay, or even a module offered by a university.

This tiered structure allows students to choose the levels at which they wish to study their various subjects, and thus provides the opportunity for them to achieve their personal peaks of excellence.

In order to achieve an optimum workload, students sitting the A-Level examination offer a mixture of compulsory and optional subjects. Other than the core H1 subjects, Mother Tongue Language, Project Work and General Paper, the typical student also offers three H2 and one H1 content-based subjects, one of which is a subject from a contrasting discipline. This will provide the student with a broad base of learning and is in line with the multi-disciplinary approach to study at university.

The more able students who have the passion for a particular subject and the time to manage workload beyond the normal subject combination can offer an additional H1 or H2 subject or further specialise by offering up to two H3 subjects. A small group of the most able students may offer a new H2 subject, Knowledge and Inquiry, in lieu of General Paper.\"

      Thank you very much!
By the way, any idea how many subjects does the average HCI \"A\" level student takes? Other than GP, mother tongue, ?

My son is in Sec 3 Ispark. He said he has to bring his laptop to school everyday as the teachers require them to do research on spot, surf the web during lessons.

Actually he has been bring his laptop almost on daily basis since SEc 2.

Does anyone know if this is indeed the case for your boys in Sec 3?

I worry that he is using it for games etc after school
That's always my worry too when they announced \"Future School\". Heard some of them like to gather at the nearby Mcdonald after school to make use of the free wireless to game togather, but not sure if it is true... You might need to do spot check at that Mcdonald if you suspect. Now DotA is very popular ... I seems to gather that this is a violent game that promote stragetric flighting among groups , like World of Warcraft. and in early March, there were two group of youngster went out for real fight after a battle in DotA, in a neighouring country.

Is your son taking research subject that requires him to do research?
My son also in sec 3 but not taking research paper nor in ispark. they do have specific on line lesson spell out in the timetable. Only on those lesson days then his ask to bring the notebook to school. However, I also have to trust that he make sensible use of the notebook to do his study. Well some entertainment is ok but not violent game or porn which are my main worries. I have to ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

I tried did a parental control setting in the notebook but it did not seem to work it also block out other useful websites. In the end, I have to release the password to him again. Can someone advice me more in this area or any other useful tool other than window 7 parental control?

            Hi Otah,
results could be better. I'm sure he is capable of better results if he spent more time on his work.

I think the nearest is Newton station. He can take 171 from NJC side. Alternatively, he can take 174 which will take him to the stretch of orchard road and he can then alight at orchard, somerset or dhoby ghaut station.

Yes, should be DSA Phase 1. But doesn't mean phase 1 is higher chance to get confirmed offer. HCI only releases the offers at the end of both phases.

Yes, I think he will secure a chance to go for DSA in Phase 1. But whether will secure a place in HCI will depend on his performance in DSA test and interview.
