All About Measuring Home-School Distance
-
it is real personal encounter last week. Printed in the MOE’s hard copy. But only the computer stated that my house distance is within 1km after the clerk checked upon my request. Suggest KSP website can come with all school within 2km website too.
-
I use my handphone GPS to select my block and then right click to show what’s nearby services. Choose Education and a list of schools will come out in order of proximity …nearest to furthest. Its rather accurate except when yours is zhun zhun 1.0 km then you better call to check as we dont know where it is measured from; from school’s centre or from the gate? A school can be as long as 500m sometimes so it makes a difference where the end/start point is…

This will be quite difficult unless parents who had paid for SLA's services volunteer the information. Also, it will mean disclosing private information of some kind since the contributing parents will have to mention the address. Street names alone will not be enough since the person staying in the next block may be \"out of range\".
And what if the distance listed here is wrong? Will the parents who based their decisions on the wrong info take action against KSP or the other members who (kindly) volunteered the info?
Personally, I don't see this as feasible. -
Here is an article in asiaone today --> http://www.asiaone.com/News/Education/Story/A1Story20090812-160665.html
Its about a full time working mum holding down 2 jobs, finding difficulty in getting her child to school on time. Although its a little tangential (secondary school), it really speaks to the issues that parents face when their children study at schools far from home.
As such, I think there should really be low tolerance for parents who use underhanded tactics (rent one room, use rental property address, false use of grandparents address) to deny those who are bona-fide residing in the vicinity of popular schools.
There was an earlier post about whether there should be whistle blowing if one hears of such cases, IMO, its a strong yes. -
This phrase from the newpaper reminds me the humilation I have been through as a parent volunteer earlier this year .
‘With regards to using inappropriate language (not only idiot, but other adjectives too, in front of the class or anywhere in the school, we advise both teachers and students to refrain from doing so.’
However, the phrase that the school use on me was a unforgettable and painful impact I decided to withdraw as parent volunteer. If I have a chance to publise I will but they ask me keep low profile for the school. -

This is interesting…
Care to share what happened? -
not sure if this has been shared, but this is a house hunting website that can be used for finding out school distance.
http://www.streetsine.com/main.html
The map will show the 1km and 2km circumference of a school, just key in the school name in \"Location\" and press enter. -

Can try this also.

The list of schools nearby a location purchased from SLA is the authoritative list which the school registration process takes reference from.
SLA maintains the Land Registry of the entire Country.
Meanwhile, try out using http://www.whereto.sg Type in your address and click on the \"Schools\" button.
I have pre-primary kids too. Having similar needs, we developed this free online map. The source of the map data is from SLA themselves, not google.
If your school of choice is well within range, then you're safe. If its at the borders, its good to purchase the list from SLA ($8.40) for peace of mind.
Good luck! -

Chief,I think you can argue that your house is within 1km of the school without much problem.
Just a rule of thumb... if your house is within the default zoom level of the primary school map on KiasuParents.com, you should be within 1km of the school. To be more accurate, use a ruler to measure the 200m marking at the bottom of the map and then use the same ruler to measure the shortest distance from your block to the school.
You can also use http://www.can.com.sg if you don't have a ruler handy :).
I don,t fully agree with you.
You can argue but wat if your prefence of school decline you?
