Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

3Boys:
There is a declining birth rate...2004 was all time low but 2 balloting slips started for Singaporeans for P1 registration last year :scratchhead: What's going on ?
:? I am struggling to understand1amber:
And we are talking of a declining birthrate over the years. This is a policy mistake at a national level. -
pinetart:
i was talking to a PR colleague and she mentioned that her gal get into MGS under a balloting situation a few years back. Now her younger gal just followed thru under phase 1A. Sorry to be selfish but I felt very uncomfortable hearing it because i had many Singaporeans friends needed to go thru balloting this time. I felt even more uncomfortable when I heard from my PR neighbour that her son got into ACS last year. She has 3 sons so the 1st one got in and subsequently, the other 2 will go through under Phase 1. It is a bonus for them because they never even buy a place near ACS- they rent it. Nothing wrong with them - it is the System! Need Mr Heng help to implement new rule.
The PRs are so proud & happy their kids get into popular schools in Singapore...like you mentioned, once first one goes in, subsequent kids enjoy Phase 1 and take up vacancies. It's ridiculous that the SYSTEM allows this to happen
It's not so much of selfish but very unfair to Singaporean kids. Supposing both parents are PRs here (refuse to give up citizenship), their kids enjoy Singapore education, finish and then return to country of origin after that. Doesn't that mean Singapore has been made used of ???? -
Yes, agree with Janet, pinetart, superduperks!
so ridiculous! our SG education system - originally meant to educate our own SG children is now been abused of !
once outsider kids go in via Phase 1, means our own SG kids get SQUEEZED OUT, DENIED a place!
we want JUSTICE! -
zoozoozoo:
Haiz...I am also a \"victim\" of this problem: Staying just opposite XXX primary school( 1 min walk ONLY!! ), got ballot out some years back and my poor child now has to travel several kilometers away to study in a convent school. And yet, we have people from as far as the other side of the island coming to this school near my place to study. Crazy P1 registration....every year there will be tons of complaints ,but after ten thousand years...still almost no chances made. At the end of the day...someone will say \"there is no system that will make everyone happy etc etc etc. True...but for many many years, many had enjoyed the way this system runs....it is time to change right?
Although there is no system that will please all, but at least listen to the people and do something. I believe the immediate prob is PRs enjoying P1 registration (Phase 1 to 2C) with Singaporean kids. There is a reduction in classes, so if PRs are enjoying same priority, it's not 'Singapore-First' anymore.
Govt says birth rate decreased, then why introduce 2 balloting slips for Singaporean kids ? Obviously THE GOVT is aware that our kids are being squeezed out and have to face balloting bcos of PRs. -
No use complaining here. Must bring this up to the minister. I am sad that govt is not doing anything about this (ok, only token 2 votes for Singaporeans).

the correct P1 registration education policy solution should be :-
- let all fellow Singaporeans compete amongst ourselves, all the way from Phase 1 to 2C. This is called ‘SINGAPOREAN Phase 1 to 2C’
- let all PRs compete amongst themselves in a newly Created PR Phase; inside also got Phase 1 to 2C. But give it another name called ‘PRs Phase 1 to 2C’.
but not to compete with SG born citizens, please.
We must distinguish clearly!
- let all foreigners compete amongst themselves in a newly Created Foreigner Phase. Call it another new name, ‘Foreigner Phase 1 to 2C’.
as to the limited vacancies in Popular schools, let MOE receiving high pay Ministers and ministry solve this problem.
instead of letting so many primary schools lying around the whole of SG with such poor low student enrolment (some can’t even form 1 class properly), MOE to figure out how best to improve or entice students to enter these schools. This way, will serve all the needs of parents from (SG phase, PR phase, Foreigner Phase).
there is no impossible solution. it’s whether they want to come together, brainstorm for solutions how to go about implementing feasible solution, or at least test out for pilot run to see. -
PRs should not be given the priority of the Ph 1& 2. If they are forced to ballot for their every kid, it will ‘motivate’ them to consider taking up citizenship or discourage them fm competiting for places at the ‘hot’ schools.
