MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni
-
Keep only P1 for siblings entitlement. Scrap all phases after that & goes by distance with the school entitlement. It’s no brain to see alumni who stay in the east put their kids to central or Bt timah for schooling depriving the little kids sleep & rests.

It works both ways. Religion is a sensitive issue and for those who subscribe to one, it can be very emotional. It is very hard to say if a Christian child should be deprived of a Christian education simply because his/her parents chose to reside outside of 2 km of a school. Singapore is small, 'outside 2 km' could mean 2.5 or 20 km. With expressways, and a car, a kid living outside of 2 km may actually reach home the same time as someone walking home a few blocks away.
You already said it's a privilege.. it shd never be an entitlement.keroppi:
It's a privilege to know that my children will be imbibing the same Christian values while receiving their education in the every same schools we graduated from.
Your privilege is another citizen's unfairness and losses.. and that place could have been given to the poor kids who stays just opposite the school. One place taken by an alumni's kids who lives >2km, one place less for the kid next door.
I know of parents with religious associations who have difficulty enrolling their children in faith-based schools because 'others', prizing only academic achievements, are overwhelming these schools. Some schools were established for a particular community and for these schools to stay true to their character and mission, the target communities should always get priority. Everybody else, I'm sorry to say, should line up behind for such schools. -
Not every parent registers his/her child in their alma mater…sometimes it could be due to inconvenience. Not every parent’s former school is still around. Some of my friends had daughters, but they didn’t register their gals in the school. Instead, they register their gals in hubby’s former school which is co-Ed. So there are still vacancies avail for Phase 2B/C.
I may not a catholic…but the values taught during my years there have stayed with me and this is a reason why my daughter is now studying in the school even though it is more than 2km away…she reaches school every morn in 10 min using PIE. She wakes up at 630am, and hubby doesn’t speed sending her to school. -

[/quote]If that is the case then we should scrap the whole notion whereby places are allocated based on home distance from school for all phases that needs balloting and everyone's name will go into the ballot bowl for the one staying next block together with the one staying at Pulau Ubin.... -
rich parent can always just move or rent within 1km of "branded" school just to register their kids for P1. This will only push up property prices even higher around "branded" school.

Agree, or should group all the connections (alumni, PV, Church, Clans, GRL) under the same pot (phase 2B) and go by distance priority with Sg Citizens over PR like the revised scheme when balloting is required. This way there is no argument whose connection/ efforts more important. All equally important. Staff/ Teachers should still stay in phase 2A and siblings in phase 1.
I find it strange that some of the forumers here are calling for the scrapping of PV stating that its unfair for the PV to have contributed their hours and yet not given a place. I sense some are just red-eyed that they can't or not willing to PV and thus calling for the abolishment of PV so that the playing field is leveled in their favor. -

By distance will favors the rich, yet the current system favors the alumni...... -
Regarding why many elite/branded schools are centralized in Bt Timah / Dunearn Rd area, fair enough. The premise of the school is fixed, but the management & the people running the school is not. Then why not move the management to the new school and have them run as branches, some may say brand is important right. It’s all just about funding! Just some idea for MOE to consider

Well, life is never fair. Please hor, don't you try and stand on a higher moral ground with me when you don't even know my situation! I stayed right next door to a very popular Christian school in the East. To get a place in that school, I will have to ballot under 2C which I only stand 1 in 4 chance to get a place. So I have kindly given up my application to let some else apply while I send our kids to our alma mater. For the last 10 years, I drive them to school so distance is not an issue for me or my kids.

FYI, there are not many Christian schools in Singapore. If you are not a Christian parent, you probably wouldn't understand. -

It's not just the funding, it's primarily the parents - it's not surprising that such schools have very strong parent support group. A lot of these schools do not need PVs. There's a very strong partnership between the teachers and parents. Many events are run by the parent volunteers. We are ready to step up and help when the schools ask for volunteers for school events, after-exam parties and funfairs. And the camaraderie between the stakeholders, aka parents, is commendable.
