The difference is very significant and also the pricing.

All honey has certain level of antibacteria property that's why long long time ago during stoneage or during eygptian time they use honey to apply as wound care and also take it orally for health benefit. This type of honey is call Active. This active honey is tested with a rating to show its strength of antibacteria property.

In New Zealand, there is a type of honey call Manuka honey which not only can kill bacteria (which is normal for all honey) but can even kill antibiotic resistance bacteria. Then researchers subsequently found out that this type of special strength antibacteria property kills bacteria in a totally difference mechanism that was not seen before. And they call this type of special strength manuka honey contains UMF - Unique Manuka Factor.

So to keep things simple...Active honey is any honey that can kill bacteria not restricted to manuka. So longan honey or bush honey or any type can be called Active as long as it is laboratory certified. eg is this active NZ honey http://www.honeynz.co.nz/store/cat121/active+honey/p156/Active10+Wild+Flora.html

UMF on the other hand is only found in manuka honey. And it laboratory tested to kill bacteria in a difference mechanism from normal or active honey. So to say, UMF honey kills bacteria via the normal mechanism and also the special mechanism. Also UMF rated honey has been approved by US FDA to be applied as wound care. The company that produce this is Comvita.

As such, pricing is very different. Active cheaper. UMF damn ex. Can check the difference if you go Natural Farm and GNC. The price difference is huge.

Hope the info helps 🙂 a bit long it is the shortest i can go lah. If not very confusing this topic.

@micollh - If the active one is working then no point upgrading. Just stick to what works 🙂 And also if taking Active honey no need to buy manuka one. Cos the word Manuka by itself commands a premium. Since the strength of Active honey is laboratory tested, it should be the same regardless of honey type.

@schweppes - The pricing difference can be very significant one. And sometime because of the confusion between active and umf people might feel that they kena con money or found super good bargain but actually it is not. Most importantly is know what we are paying for can liao.

There's a saying about dont use metal spoon for honey. Not sure how true it is lah but since the whole world says so...so stick to it bah.

There are supposed to be so many benefits of taking manuka.

I only get HNZ. Every day, I give my kids a teaspoon of it…UMF 10. Use plastic spoon bcos the promoter told me metal spoon will reduce the effectiveness. Also, do not add hot water as it will also reduce effectiveness.

Watched this show hosted by Pornsak. It has many anti-bacteria, anti-inflammatory benefits. Hope it is able to keep my kids in tip top condition in such a hot weather.

So taking UMF honey is like taking medicine? Any harm if taken daily esp for young children who need to build their immune system the natural way?

I wouldnt say manuka is medication. It is more like a supplement. Not necessary to take daily for young kids below 12. Maybe 3x a week, UMF 5 or 10. Teaspoon in the morn on empty stomach.

May I know is mixing with hot water will reduce the effectiveness? There is no instruction on the container on how to take it.
