After I read yr post I talk to my hub, also call rainbow . After I have told them what my son is able to do. She say my son will not need to use pecs.

We hav decided not to postpone rainbow will join next yr w 2 others 2 years older then my son kids…

Why path light has sO high standard , aint they suppose to help specials needs ?? If they cant go to path light n can’t go normal primary ?

There are a number school our kids can go. Anyway is now end of the school term soon, so it's better for you to join rainbow next year..

Path light only accepts a HF ASD and must meet their Minimum IQ requirement (normal iq onwards) Cos of their low teacher student ratio, they can't take in too many students.

No choice, Singapore is lacking a lot of medical professionals esp in rehabilitation .. SLT, ot, physiotherapist and many special needs teachers as well... Not many would want to be a special need teacher. It takes a compassionate heart to take up such jobs..

And if many patients' carers like yourself feel that these people are wasting you time, then how rewarding can their career get?

I agree with Mashy, you need to get help. Talk to a friend or there are helplines you can call and talk to as well.

I remembered last year this time I was desperately searching for help for my son… Waiting list for SLT is damn long… And I was searching for pte SLT near to met stations and all are fully booked.


At the same time we are looking at EIPIC centre that is near our place, Those that need no require Carer to go in.

I went went KKH allergy dept to asked abt the gluten free diet and was ridiculed by the doctor saying that is baseless study, not scientifically proven and I shld focus all my energy on intervention instead. For a period of time I still insist on GFCF diet which makes my life even much much harder than before… I was really desperate that time. I would do anything that can help my child. I hv given up that diet after trying for 3 months cos its very expensive to maintain and the food is so yucky.

I was really lucky to find a pte SLT near me, a eipic center near me… And recently I managed to get SLT lessons from rehab which I find is very good.

And now my son has good eye contact when he requires something from me… Recently he will say "mom look at this" , "mummy u see this". Initiating joint attention. We hv come a long way with my son…If I hv not seek help for my son, and delay his eipic, keep thinking how unfair the system is … He would never be where he is today. I am grateful for eipic and all the therapists that hv helped him all the way…

I have actually registered him for a mainstream primary as well as sent him for assessment at Pathlight. If he is eligible for PL, I should be placing him there because I feel that he'd be much happier there. Of course I do worry abt discrimination in the future. However, I think his happiness now comes first; as for the future, who knows what may happen. If he's able to improve socially, pple wouldn't care that he was in PL. So unless he improves dramatically during these few months.....

Anyway, FYI, there will no longer be a preparatory track in PL. There will however be a \"foundation primary one\" (for students who needs more help) and \"standard primary one\". Thus, some 7 year-olds may have to do 2 years of Primary 1. No more admission for 6 yo.

Thanks for the information. It takes a lot of courage to take the less travelled path, with the additional pressures to face potential criticism and discrimination. I applaude you for that.

Yes, at the open house they told us that the preparatory track will be changed to a foundation program, but they said that besides the timing, the rest remains unchanged.

From what we heard, the preparatory track sounded like an independent track which could lead to either PL P1 or mainstream P1. Do you know whether this is the same approach with the new 'foundation P1', or whether students need to proceed to PL's 'standard P1' after finishing 'foundation P1'?

Well said, nugget, I am also grateful for the support that the EIPIC program has provided to my daughter, evident from the progress that she has made. While the system is not perfect, the intention to support special needs children is there and everyone is working within their means within the system to support the children.

Kudos to this group of professionals.

Me too. I do agree that the EIPIC teachers are very good, kind and patient. One of my girl’s classmates in EIPIC kicked his EIPIC teacher’s stomach when the therapist tried to lift him up from the floor. The EIPIC teacher tolerated the pain and still tried to coax the boy to get up. I’m very impressed with their professional and extraordinary tolerance towards kids with special needs.

Anyone has kid who can read but cannot spell?
If yes, what do you do?

Mine before k2. How old is your kid?

My boy learnt to read very early without being taught. We just read to him everyday. When he was in k2, I was shocked that he couldn't do his spelling tests. It was agony at each test. Chinese tingxie was surprisingly easier on him even though he couldn't read it.

But in primary 1, something changed. He started able to spell very well. We also don't know what happened. He scored full marks most of the time with little practice. We just give him a test immediately after reading the words and he could mostly get them all correct. Now he prefers the more challenging spelling list from British council. Even that take just 3-4 rounds to get full marks.

Something has changed over this past 1 yr in pri sch. He now has good eye contact, talk about his friends, tell me about his school and what happened, talk to his friends etc. and when he sees his friends outside of school, he will even say hello to them. Previously he couldn't even recognize them and will largely ignore his classmates. I'm very happy with his progress and although I don't know exactly what happened, it's been a wonderful progress.

I didn't read my son's psychological report so many times cos I know whatever that is written inside there was what I told the psychologist and now the diagnostic are passe already..


I needed that report more like a confirmation to say my son is ASD n get into eipic.

My son never do any iq test.. How is it being tested??

Just now my son went to ask this NT kid \"what is your name\" at the playground... The NT kid never reply lol... But when the NT kid tries to tell my son to follow him, my son just \"ahhhhh\" and ran off.. But I am still happy my son learn what to say when seeing his peers like asking him for his name..

Haha, I also dunno how they do it exactly coz we were chased out of the room when they do that. But think they ask specific questions and if he can answer, they will continue. If not they stop. The longer he stays in there, the better his iq.

My K2 boy is just mastering to read phonetically. I spent the past 9 months training him in phonics in consonants and blending. He is still behind his peers who have enrichments and is about the level where he will try to break the longer words and blend. His monte cc does not have spelling and I have yet to train him because I feel that he needs to grasp his auditory skills and reading fluency first. I will start training him to spell phonetically and memory in P1...late...but I'm not worry about spelling...rather reading, comprehension and story telling. He can flunk his spellings in P1 as I see 1 and 2 as building grounds.
