I also recommend the Doraemon comic books from Popular Bookshop, they have a set of 6 large print books in colour, my girl loves to read them now.

I also have them! How much do you pay for them at Popular? I got mine at $4 per book from a book stall at Chinatown.

I got 6 books for $22.92 after 10% discount, works out to $3.82 per book.

One day my girl recited a long conversation from the book to me in Mandarin ! She likes that story so much she has read it over and over again until she memorized the words already.

Emm... now I know it's not always cheaper to get books from book stalls. But honestly, I have never seen these in the Popular that I go.

            Hi parents,

In Eduplus, the school organises competitions for Story telling, Recitals, Performances etc once in a while for all the centres. The students are then exposed to various types of competition and they get to go on stage to perform. This is done on a rather big scale as they have quite a few centres.

Do the other language schools Tien Hsia, Berries or Jiang Education organise Chinese speaking competitions within their centres? Can anyone advise?

My kid enjoys these different activities but as I am thinking of switching him out of Eduplus, would be good to know if the others do it as well.
            don't thing so ...

hope you can offer some advise on where to get non-hanyu pinyin books cos it's really hard to find.

              smurf,
I am getting many books from http://www.dangdang.com now. If you have Citibank Credit Card, you can order from them directly. Their books are very cheap and good. I have just ordered 13 Chinese books for about SGD 20 including shipping. They have a huge variety of Chinese books, mostly no hanyu pinyin which are called 注音 books. I will be posting more recommended books in the \"Teaching Chinese at home\" thread.

Or you can try this book shop at Bras Basah. They carry many books from dangdang. But it is much more expensive.

              Hi, Tamarind,

I find the shipping still quite expensive. I recently bought about 932 yuan worth of books, and the shipping was 708 yuan.

I saw on another forum that someone is organising a BP with shipping charges of $295 for 100kg. Do you think it is more economical to use that ?

I went Jiang Education but was being put off as the class is too big. 1 teacher to 20 students.

Mee too. Certain time slots on weekend have more than 25 pp. For that kind of charges, I think it is silly to join. Friend told me their materials are prepared by their teachers thru cut and paste from old past assessment books and they are mainly \"imported\" from Fujian province or hainan directly by the centre. You would never see their teacher at another schools. Some of them do not pronounce Chinese accurately or speak with Hokkien accent. Friend's child got insulted by the teacher when they decided not to continue with them.

Are the classes at other chinese enrichment a lot smaller or is it still in the range of 10-15 kids ?

Han Lang (opp jiang) would start a class as long as there are two students. You can check with them. Their material is same throughout the island.
