RE: Way to GEP for a Normal Kid
sushi88:
Since the GEP screening process does not seem to be able to distinguish between those who have been exposed to and those who have not been exposed to these \"regular activities\", it is actually :razz:pirate:
I think the title is somewhat misleading. The sharing is trying to emphasise that GEP is a fair screening process. The boy is definitely not just an average boy cos he could read Harry Porter at P3. The parents was trying to say that he did things normally with no GEP training and he got into the programme. They did not expect him to get in because elder sis was smarter but did not get in. Think the parents forgot one point. Boys' chance is 2/3 and girls' 1/3 so the competition for girls is tougher even if the elder girl is smarter than the boy.
To me, TLL, Mathshub, doing MO or IQ questions etc are not regular activities. Regular activities are watching TV, playing computer games, swimming, mucking about at the playground...
I just quote from TLL's own website.
The program is specially developed to expose students to some of the best features in the Gifted Education Program and the mainstream curriculum.
We focus on developing critical reasoning skills or higher-order thinking skills and creativity, while building a rock-solid mastery of topics to enable students to excel in tests and exams.
As for reading the Harry Potter series, the more advanced readers in dd's non GEP school are already reading the Hunger Games and Warrior series at P3 - without the benefit of TLL.
To me, his kid is the not-so-regular kid, so perhaps doing those activities are regular for him for his active mind. As you said advanced readers can read Harry porter so this kid is also an advanced reader plus more.....nothing so \"normal\" about the kid.
Ya I'm so late lol but I am just wondering why he is plus more since an advanced reader can read harry potter and he can too.

RE: Way to GEP for a Normal Kid
The title may not be misleading. Like others have pointed out, he did go for lessons like Piano and Weiqi which could be more useful for this because it has to do with analytical thinking, so perhaps he could have been a normal kid but got mixed in.

Yes, I agree but other term also sounds kind of awkward.
Most of us(This is not meant to be racist, but over 70% of Singaporeans are Chinese so going by this, the Chinese is the majority.) here are Chinese, I think we all see this place as a country so it probably wasn't nice to use 'Chinese' Yes indeed that was very disrespectful (tbh I didn't read it I just assumed it's in it.) but I have Teachers from China and they don't think that way.........StillThinking:
PS: I find the use of \"坡县” to describe Singapore disrespectful. It would appear that to Chinese, Singapore is not a country but just a county (size of a sesame seed).
\"Mainland Chinese\" or AT...?
Well, ya true I agree, but well, I think it's really only her or him as my Teachers from China do not call Singapore that

RE: [Toa Payoh] Primary Schools
I’m from KCS. I recently graduated and here is my view. It’s a very good school. The teachers really really really care about you. In terms of results… Well, from what I know, many of those who come into this school have problems, this is especially true in the foundation classes. Their probelms isn’t just the simple ones you find everywhere too. It is much more serious. And yet the results for the school is still over average. Another thing is conduct. As I have mentioned, many students in the foundation classes have serious family problems, I am not looking down on them, but think about it this way. They have family problems, so they don’t have a condusive environment to study in so… The conduct in the ‘better’ classes I would say are much more better than those in other schools. A simple way to know is from how little vulgar words we really know, while others(at least those my classmates mixed with in Sec) know like a million times of what we knew. If your child enterd this school, I can’t guarantee anything, but I can say that they will really enjoy the 6 years. I remember during CNY, the whole canteen was filled with the us, Sec 1 alumnus, and many of other levels.

RE: mistake in sec history book went unnoticed for 7 years
I know this is a dead topic, but the difference is pretty big tbh… I wonder what the teachers were doing. Also, the Feudal Lord is the same as the Marquis that we see in the subtitles of Ancient Chinese shows. TBH, my social studies teacher when I was in primary school had no knowledge of Chinese history. Anyways, great, there’s a error in the primary school tb on Chinese history too, it writes that the first dynasty is Shang instead of Xia, though possibly because of the lack of information at the time of writing.
