    • RE: All About English Creative Writing

      Jean.H:

I've heard of two pretty good places! The Alternative Story and The Learning Lab.

The Alternative Story was quite effective for my friend's son. They teach composition witing in themes. They are able to teach in a very simple manner. My friend's son showed significant improvement just after 2 months of lessons. I think they teach using mind maps and mneumonics.

Learning Lab has a very good reputation too. But I think it's not as structured. And the prices are much higher as well.
      Hi Jean,

I've been searching high and low for creative writing classes too. The Alternative Story sounds good. Can you pm me the contact please?

    • RE: Kids say the darnest things...

My boy’s school gave them e-homework for the hols. Sometimes, we experienced connection problems with the portal and had a hard time loading the page. Last week, I reminded him to do his homework. He was in his bedroom playing and asked me to help him connect to the webpage, adding: "If the thing hang, just say ‘this is so maddening!!’, so I’ll know and can continue playing ok?"

    • RE: Any parents of gifted children here ?

      deminc:
I think it depends on the individual child's temperament and level of giftedness.

I hear that GEP students - at least in some schools - are not ranked in class according to results. I think that is great. At the same time, the contents and delivery methods are different and recognise that gifted kids have different learning needs and temperaments. Mind you, it's not the same as scoring high. A smart, high-achieving child who is NOT gifted may score well for exams but struggle in GEP class. A gifted student may thrive in GEP class, but that doesn't mean he/she will score well for the \"normal\" exams like PSLE.
If the kid is truly gifted, GEP style of learning will be better suited for him simply because the program is tailor made for his different learning needs, and not because he will score better in PSLE by going into the program. If your child is truly gifted, he will benefit from the GEP program because it is tailor made to suit his learning style and needs. That, I think, is the essence of the GEP - the recognition that these kids learn differently and therefore should be taught differently.

    • RE: When your child wants this and that...

I will usually buy the toys myself as my son seldom asks for them, even if he likes them - he'll just play with the toy in the store then put it back on the shelf without asking me to buy. I have told him it's ok to want to buy a toy once in a while. Now, we are saving up to buy a WII console - he will save part of his pocket money everyday and pay for half the price with the other half paid by me 😉

      ChiefKiasu:

Sorry ks2me and wwcookie... both of you fell into the same trap as I when I first did the question. Charles did NOT just DOUBLE his sum of money. He TRIPLED it. Read the question again :).

Also, you were using algebra towards the last step. Naughty naughty 🙂
Oh ya dint read the question properly

    • RE: Q&A - P3 Math

      ks2me:
      1 unit=u (Charles at first=Daniel at first)

      ______
      u-8 (Daniel spent 8 dollars)

      ___________ ____________
1u 1u (Charles after it doubles)

      ______ _____ _____ ______
      u-8 u-8 u-8 u-8 (Charles 4 times of Daniel after D spent)

      So 4[u-8] = 2u
      4u - 32 = 2u
      2u = 32
      u = 32/2 = 16

So Charles at first = Daniel at first = $16
I got the same ans as ks2me  Is this modeling mehod?

Are parents willing to pay more for the buses? Hey, these people are trying to run a business too.

How much are other countries' parents paying for the bus fares?
Then how do other countries' bus drivers survive?? What I mean is, where there's a will, there's a way and I really dont mind paying more for bus fares if it means my boy can sleep later
      jedamum:
Are other countries' parents sending their kids to primary school 10km away from their home? It seems that while some parents have no qualms about letting their kids hop onto the school buses at the wee hours of the morning to travel to school 10km away , others have grouses over school starting early.
Well, we live a mere 5 mins away from the school by car but the bus comes around to pick up the kids in my area at 6.30am. School starts at 7.20am. The kids arrive at school before 7am. Most adults dont even start the day so early (of cos not counting those who have to becos of the kids' school). Yes, I have grouses - on behalf of the poor kids!

    • RE: Start at 9am

I am 1000% for it! What nonsense about the bus drivers other income! Why is it that other countries do not have this problem? I heard in Australia, school starts at 9 or 10am and finishes at 3 or 4pm. The children get more sleep there. In fact, I read somewhere Singapore schools have the earliest starting time. By right with single session, schools should start later. Our poor kids!!

Maybe what could work is a club of similarly afflicted parents so we can muster our resources and help each other out. It won't help with the school work, but it helps when we have more information.

Breguet, I support you! We should get together and help each other out. I read that there are such clubs in the US. We should start one here too 😄
