Yes, this is the case. Don't have to spend time on Chinese lessons in JC 1st year. Works the same way for IP. Now there's a new oral component added to the Higher Chinese paper.
If I am not wrong, most of the IP school students do not need to take CL O level in Sec 3, they only take HCL O level in Sec 4 while the express schools students need to take both CL O level in Sec 3 and HCL O level in Sec 4.SpartanMum:
My dd is currently doing Higher Chinese. Can someone tell me the difference in Higher Chinese and normal Chinese in terms of mainstream express O Levels exams (non IP)? DD may have to decide which one to do.
Higher Chinese at O level (same as IP Higher Chinese by the way) would be at a higher level than standard Chinese. Students take the O level standard Chinese paper in Sec 3 and then the Higher Chinese paper in Sec 4. Taking Higher Chinese and getting a pass exempts the student from having to do Chinese in JC.
Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong, k?

Thanks for the info. Do the Higher Chinese students take the O Level Chinese paper in Sec 4 again?
For the 'o' level track students, they do not take 2 'o' level Chinese papers (CL and HCL) in the same year. I believe this applies to the other mother tongues as well. Thus, depending on their performances in the cl paper taken during sec 3, the school will recommend/ decide if the student will continue with HCL in sec 4 or to convert to CL in sec 4. As far as I know, there isn't a standardised CL grade in order to continue with HCL in sec 4, I heard a school required students to achieve at least an A2 in order to continue with HCL in sec 4 while another school allowed students who achieved B3 or even B4 to continue with HCL in sec 4. -
Good morning, Parents.
Will kids be penalized if they did the PSLE Math Paper 2 questions mostly in pencil?
DD did her Math paper mostly in pencil and she is now worrying that she might be penalized.
Thanks all in advance. -
No, lansharac, your child will not be penalised in marking. Don't worry.

Dear Gabby, thank you for the kind reply.

Over the years, I have seen some of my students who still prefer to use pencils for word problems. -
I am trying to figure out what to select when results are out next week. Greatly appreciate anyone who are experts in this to help me here :
It looks like if your child takes :
HMTL - gets 2 extra points for JC entry
3rd Language - gets 2 extra points for JC entry
So if the child takes both HMTL and 3rd language he gets 4 extra for JC entry?
Anybody knows if MEP or AEP also get 2 extra points?
Is there a limit to the elective the child is allowed? e.g. if already taking 3rd language , is the child allowed AEP or MEP ? -
it’s actually minus 2 points at O levels if you take HMTL, not plus - opposite of PSLE!
There is no concession of 2 points for 3rd language. The 2 points deduction is only if you take Malay Special Programme (those who haven’t taken Malay at PSLE) or Chinese Special prog (For those who haven’t taken CL at PSLE) and pass at O levels.
There is no concession for AEP / MEP / Third Lang, but you can use that as one of your O level subjects, if you do well in it. -
