Hi Parents and kids of 2011 Sec One,

After a year of hard work for PSLE, you have finally "reached" your Sec One destination. Congrats and good effort put in on your part.

We have a thread on "DSA and Mainstream" under the Primary School Academic Preparation and Support for 2011 PSLE maintream students trying for DSA in the coming year. Would appreciate any sharing of DSA experiences in that thread so that we can learn as well from your DSA journey. Thank you in advance for your sharing.

There is also a thread for "DSA and GEP" for those wanting to share their GEPpers DSA journey.

We wish you all the Best in your 2011 Sec One journey, and look forward to hear more of your experiences along the way.

After going thru all the DSA and appealing, thought I will share my experience and views with the KSP.

However, in no way is this sharing meant to spark arguments, just sharing of my two cents...

          1) DSA to my son is definitely an experience, having to see boys from other schools meeting in a common venue, anxiously waiting to take a common test for the first time....Further, the interview sessions and discussions is definitely not something he can expect to receive in class. For my DS, it did help him to stay focused and prepared for the PSLE... I will definitely do it again for my DS2 in 4 years time. Call it a wake up call, call it anything, I think it is an experience for them that will mould certain part of their outlook and character.

However, I am personally against the idea of 'DSAing' to all or more than 2 schools. To me, DSA is a process for the kid to decide if the school is what they would like to work towards spending the next 6 years in and finetuning their focus or bearing. Trying one's luck with as many school as possible is not a wise choice as it is likely to be something initiated and led by parents.

          2) Pros and Cons of DSA: If one do not get into any school of choice via DSA, well, it is back to drawing board and working hard for PSLE... ...simple cos that's not the end of world. More importantly, it do not in anyway mean that you are not 'qualified' or lousy in any way.

Getting one within your choices could mean a safety net and less stress for PSLE since the focus can then be on getting as good result as the individual can without having to be distracted by the question if their score will be good enough for XXX sec school during central posting.

However, the real draw back is when you are DSAed but not into your first choice but your score is obviously good enough to try for your first choice under central posting but not allowed to during PSLE result release day...

This is when all the appealing comes into the picture. Of course appeal comes in a package... .... worries, anxieties, long wait, going down to submit for appeal, concern how this process will affect the kid, what if ... (缺一不可)

In conclusion, I am glad that my DS managed to get into HCI via DSA though RI will be nearer to home and will come closer to his future plans. But we trust ... ...

Also, I come to conclusion that the job of parenting, at least for me, is to make sure that I gather as much information and understanding of the process so that I can be there to share, guide and direct my children. (tiring though).

Our job is not to decide for them since I did not expect my parents to decide my future when I was at their age. Rather, we should present information as factual, objective and true, and at a level that we know our individual child will understand. Sit there and be with them when they need clarifications. Telling them that I too do not know a lot of things and is still learning did in a large way help to bridge our common understanding (e.g. why are parents so kiasu, doing so much...) and gaps.

For me, I have one smaller one taking PSLE in 4 years time and elder boy starting a new chapter in HCI. So let's share our wisdom here to make our journey less tedious and tiring.

Good luck to one and all, and Happy new year. :celebrate:
          :goodpost:

ksasalways, all the best to your son! Hope he will enjoy his HCI journey as much as many of our boys. My younger one is heading there for Sec 1 next year, too.

Dear kasalways, thank you for your generous sharing. Very relevant to me as DD will be doing DSA and PSLE in 2011.

Totally agree with your view that DSA is not about 'trying one's luck' and about the role of parents in the DSA process.

I'm sure 2011 will be an enriching year for both you and your son as you journey with him in his next phase - as a secondary school student 😄

                Absolutely agree! :goodpost:

Actually I discovered that as DSA gets more \"popular\" over the years, the number of appeal cases also increased drastically. Previously, seems like most who appeal who can make it for the COP (or a mark lower than the COP) will get in the school without issues. However, this year, there are cases of appeals above the COP unable to make it to the popular school. Due to more appeals and now school faced with more to choose from?

I believe \"Every road leads to Rome\" - as long as the kid keeps his \"destination\" in sight. HCI is a great school and I'm sure your son will enjoy his school years there. All the Best to your son in his HCI Sec journey and we hope to hear more your experiences along the way!

This morning I went to VS for orientation, his name has been removed from the class list, should be sucessfully transfered to DHS.

                  Hi tansm2010.
Is ur DS in 1A class? My DS in 1A. Saw a mother hastily pulled her son out of class today and walked off smilling. Her son still wearing his pri sch uniform. My wife was telling me they must hv got a place somewhere after the appeal....

No. DS at 1C. Is your DS have 3rd language at Bishan??[/quote]No. He is taking RSP in VS itself. Save alot of travelling time. Spoken to the teacher in charge of the program and quite impressed.

Having been through DSA for 2 children, this is my advice :-

                      - Try at most 2 schools. Why? Any successful DSA to your 3rd choice will leave you unhappy, esp. when PSLE result allows you to get into 1st 2 schools, but you can’t participate in S1 posting and can only appeal. Also, DSA distracts the child from studying and is emotionally draining, especially if it involves GAT tests and CCA trials.

                      - Be prepared for rejection, and what it does to both parents and child. My child was not successful for both DSA, but she was matured enough to let go emotionally and work hard for PSLE. Some children may find rejection hard to swallow.

                      - A rejected DSA may be a blessing in disguise. I was glad my child was rejected by her 2nd choice school, so that she could participate in S1 posting. I think she would not have been happy with even her 2nd choice school. Also, the DSA process allows the CCA coach to evaluate the child, and this may be useful for appealing later on.

                      - Don’t get too caught up with the DSA buzz and prepare the child well for PSLE.

More importantly, PSLE to secondary school is just one more step of a long journey for the child’s academic and character development. How the child eventually fares in life depends on how he/she can face success with humility, AND failure with dignity and the will to move on.

my friend score 222 and appealed for Yishun Town Secondary School(COP of 235)she does not have any talent and does not have a CCA. she went for an interview three days ago and the principal says that if there is vancacy,he will give it to her and she says that she is confident of entering that school. She then asked me whether she could enter that school..As i am not sure, can i ask u guys? (Sorry for my terrible english)

Sorry, but this is a bit like what do you think will be the first prize number for this weekend????

I think if your friend have went thru the interview and received comments directly from the school, then he/she should be in best position to discern.

Of course the result is kind of far from the COP. In any case, good luck.

My child store 230 and we appeal for Yishun Town too. We want through the interview too and just almost giving up hope... 😞 , then at ~1pm today, we received a call from YTSS that my child is accepted... 😄 , what a relief 😄 ; after 9 days of stress and worried, finally it is over and we will be busy preparing for the new school for the next few days.
