Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

This was debated hotly in KSP few months ago..lilfeets:
Clearly, children of citizens living close to the school should be given higher priority.
Apparently, it is not as \"clear\" as what the author wants it to be
if she compare to non-alumni, non-grassroot, non-this, non-that.. clearly she got it..
But if all these are thrown it.. it became less clear liao..
Just to clarify, this was what the lady wrote to ST, not me

Lots of truth there..
LOL... and the funny thing is, most parents new to Singapore education think P1 registration is the worst part of Primary school education. It's like - when I get my kid into the most popular school, my kid will have it made.
The fact is, the more popular the school, the more results-oriented it is likely to be, the more tuition/enrichment we have to send our kids, and the more we will complain about our kids being \"pushed\" by the garmen to study till they turn blue.
For the record, the reason why KiasuParents.com post and track the P1 Registration statistics is to let people know why they should avoid the most popular schools - they are next to impossible to get in if you have no affiliations, and even if you did manage to do so, it will be 6 years of tears, sleepness nights, and disillusion if your child does not perform up to your expectations.
But hor, can I suggest of KSP can post the % of tuition these popular schools student go to, and the average amount each spend on the kids on tuition/enrichment etc.. The MOE may face less \"attack/criticism\" on it's P1 admission machinery.........
of coz, these data are not available to anyone lah.. as of now..
see.. data is useful..
Of coz again, if the parent choose the path with their eye WIDE OPEN (as in, with convincing tuition data and what to expect), they will have abandon the right to complain later on..
Now, I believe, and strongly believe, that many parent's belief is, the school's good results is due to the extra-ordinary teachers they have inside.. that's why they try ways and means to get in.. no?

I take that as +1 to my comment
Then parents will start to track where do the Principals and HODs of these ex-branded schools get posted to.janet_lee88:
No NYPS, RGPS, CHS, Tao Nan etc etc...all renamed as ABC Primary School. Is this possible?

I agree with Cheif. At the end of the day, parents need to evaluate the type of school our child will trive in. If the child ia acemedically inclined, perhaps such schools might be good for them to push them above and beyond. If the child is not academicaly inclined, perhaps a regular school is just as good. Gettign intothe school is only the first step. Too often I have seen parents asking if they should take their child out of a "branded" school because the child is seeing himself/herself as hopeless since always bottom of the class and failing tests. Self esteem does not gets rebuilt overnight esp when young children are not able to process complex thoughts and emotions as well as adults. Are we pushing our children to gain "face" for ourselves or really doing justice for our children?
Secondly, we seem to deem that getting our kids into "good" schools will preduce results. That is often not so. I often think that while getting in is stressful, staying the school is harder if the child cannot keep up. How often have we heard about parents having to transfer the child out of a branded school because child cannot cope? -

I don't believe that teachers in branded school are better than teachers in non-branded schools. I do know that kids who go to \"branded\" schools are more priviledged and more exposed than kids to regular schools. It is not the teacher's fault that the kids in branded school has memorised the textbooks before they even start classes. Hence, the wonderful results the school preduces. In regular schools, they may have kids with no prior kindergarten exposure, parents who could not afford to spend time helping their children do to making a living etc. In production terms, good quality material in, output quality should be good, assuming that production techniques equal.limlim:

The bubble will not burst unless SC find that their kids do not have a school to attend in P1.P1 registration is going to be more crazy yr after yr, and the bubble is not sustainable and surely will burst one day. Current system is pointing all the way to essence system those ppl have been enjoying...
SAHM_TAN:
I think need to view the new policy in context. The policy is to give SC pirority in the event there's a need for balloting. It's not meant to reduce application for phase 1- phase 2A2, so that there will be more vacancies for phase 2B and Phase 2C.
I view existing registration policy as giving priority to parents who have existing or past relationship with the school, meaning either 1st kid studying in the school now or parent was a student, etc as per criteria stated in each phase.
I think it is impossible to please all parents. I think in the case of P1 registration, the gvt's task is to make sure all eligible kids have a primary school to go in P1 via a systematic process. The rest are choices made by
parents. I did not exercise my Phase 2A2 rights last yr becos the school was too far, I have a ds to consider, it will be logistics madness to ferry my dds and ds later on if they are in different school and my views are different from my parents' choice for me.
:offtopic:
All the best to all the parents under phase 2B and Phase 2C. I was under Phase 2B last year, I can understand the stress though my choice of school do not induce as much stress as compared to other schools. Have back-up plans.
What's happening now is that many parents are selecting primary schools based on their criteria and what they think is best for their kids. There's nothing wrong in this. To achieve sending their kids to their preferred primary school, they will move house, buy a few properties near to a number of top schools, be PV, join clan, be GRL. Not going to include change religion becos I hope there's still something that we hold as sacred. None of these actions are wrong. BUT there's still an element of risk becos supply will not be enough to meet demand. Then there's a group of parents who happen to stay near a popular school but might not have the chance to send their kids there.
Now from the gvt's point of view, there ARE enough vacancies for the kids here, there are still vacancies in some schools after P1 registration is over. To them all schools have teachers who are able to educate the kids. -
