I think need to view the new policy in context. The policy is to give SC pirority in the event there's a need for balloting. It's not meant to reduce application for phase 1- phase 2A2, so that there will be more vacancies for phase 2B and Phase 2C.
I view existing registration policy as giving priority to parents who have existing or past relationship with the school, meaning either 1st kid studying in the school now or parent was a student, etc as per criteria stated in each phase.
I think it is impossible to please all parents. I think in the case of P1 registration, the gvt's task is to make sure all eligible kids have a primary school to go in P1 via a systematic process. The rest are choices made by
parents. I did not exercise my Phase 2A2 rights last yr becos the school was too far, I have a ds to consider, it will be logistics madness to ferry my dds and ds later on if they are in different school and my views are different from my parents' choice for me.

All the best to all the parents under phase 2B and Phase 2C. I was under Phase 2B last year, I can understand the stress though my choice of school do not induce as much stress as compared to other schools. Have back-up plans.
What's happening now is that many parents are selecting primary schools based on their criteria and what they think is best for their kids. There's nothing wrong in this. To achieve sending their kids to their preferred primary school, they will move house, buy a few properties near to a number of top schools, be PV, join clan, be GRL. Not going to include change religion becos I hope there's still something that we hold as sacred. None of these actions are wrong. BUT there's still an element of risk becos supply will not be enough to meet demand. Then there's a group of parents who happen to stay near a popular school but might not have the chance to send their kids there.
Now from the gvt's point of view, there ARE enough vacancies for the kids here, there are still vacancies in some schools after P1 registration is over. To them all schools have teachers who are able to educate the kids. -

While these statements certainty makes sense.. I would like to voice a little different perspective..
Otherwise, any other school will do as well, so you should just choose the one nearest to you that your child can excel in. Spend your energy on preparing your child for his new environment.
Don't do it to your kids. The most important quality as a student is confidence about one's ability. Put your kid in the environment that maximises their chance of excelling at their level!
For e.g. with I was in P school, I have my interests.. but, the school don't have the resources or the interest to develop a kids ability to their maximum potential. For e.g. branded school may have an established science club, maths club etc.. for student to pursue their interests and hobbies.. while for neighborhood school, maybe it is lacking or the school's main focus is on \"better PLSE passing rate\", and no more energy to develop the kids in other areas (like future scientist, artist etc..).
That is the impression I get. Maybe things change now.. But I still feel a little regrettable that I'm deprived of some of the resources that I might have in other \"better schools\", which I didn't get in the Primary school that I attended.
Hence, I make sure my kids get into a reasonable school that has reasonable resources for them to seek their interests and develop their potential, not only academically.
They may face difficulties at P1, but they could appreciate the exposure at P4..

Next, I want to talk about Secondary School. I choose a neighborhood school. I top some subjects in the school in O level. The feeling is good, of coz.. however, after I went to JC, I realized.. the training I receive seems to be different from those of top schools. The other students seems very well-exposed.. so many things my teacher did not teach me. If I had went to a better school, the exposure might be different and I might get a better shot at developing my potential further. Then again, it may be a dilemma.. to be an average ranking student who is well trained in top school, or a top student but not well trained in an unknown school? YMMV.. maybe I wouldn't regret my choice..
I do not want my kids to be deprived of the things that I wanted to have but never get.
I would want them to be in a better school, to get a chance at that shot for greater success.
Different parents might have different view.. But I just share what I felt. -

In school A, there was no chess club. The parents of those kids who were interested in chess set up a chess club, with the approval of the Principal of course. The parents volunteered to administer and fund the chess club, brought in instructors, went to the extent to teach the other students chess during recess so as to get more students interested in chess, etc. Today, the chess club is a formal club in the school.
In school B, there is no chess club at all even though all the school needs is to bring in external instructors to teach chess and the fees will be paid by the parents. The school just need to get teachers to administer the chess lessons.
In school C, there are teachers assigned to administer the chess club and enrichment classes, which are taught by external instructors. Parents pay for the chess lessons.
The three schools are:
1. An average neighbourhood school
2. A popular neighbourhood school
3. A popular and elite girls' school -

Darn while I agree with most of what I have read in the past few posts, I also feel a need to speak up a little for these ‘branded’ schools. Ok disclaimer first. This is my own personal experience and observation.
Please do not totally discount a school’s effort for whatever results they have achieved. Be they branded or not.
For branded schools, they tend to have a long history of good results, even before the ‘tuition fever’ started. I like to think that they have done something right long time ago and the culture and best practises have been maintained and even improved upon through the years. As for them having children from more affluent parents as such can afford more tuition, etc. Well, maybe that could be a factor at play but not the only factor. DS is in a non-branded school located in a cosy landed estate. I would say most of his schoolmates come from pretty well to do families with most of them attending this and that enrichment or tuition. But year after year, we do not see that school producing the kind of results that branded schools do.
DD is in a branded school. Comparing DD’s P1 and 2 years and DS’s P1 now, DS’s school seem to pile more work on the kids and drill them a lot more. In fact, DS seem to have more work compared to DD who is now in P3. So it seem to me that DS is in a more stressful school than DD.
Just my little 2 cents worth of thoughts. -
usually the popular and branded schools have longer history and tradition and well established systems and procedures of doing things
proven and established & supportive systems and procedures do enhance and bring out the teachers’ ability, instead of stifling it.
history and tradition also set the norms and expectation and children behave accordingly, more than less
branded schools tend to have strong PTA and alumni and management board too and that is a big plus factor, as all stakeholders are directly involved and hence less variances from stated objectives -
