Pignite:
Just curious, are these 'compulsory extra supp classes' in your ds' school for revision and enrichment, or are they an extension of regular lessons to complete the syllabus?Me too...just hoping for a pass in HCL and work with it from there.
DS has already made plans with his friends. He is going over to his friend's hse this weekend to play vanguards. After tmrw last paper he said he just want to chill out for a day without any studying. He knows he still has to continue his regular self study because he said he probably didn't do so well in CA1.
He complained the exams had been tough. I asked him to treat this as a \"wake up call\" to prepare for PSLE...so much homework and so little time to disgest, with CCA, House practises, and not to mention those 2 days of compulsory extra supplementary classes. Next term i will take him out of these extra classes and do home coaching. This way he will have more time to do his self study and also have sometime for execrises. Never mind if i have to stand up to those teachers and write official letter to school. (that what they threaten the kids)....
I'm also tempted to opt out for my dd but the HOD says it is extra time to cover the topics. Can't seem to opt out in our case.
My dd's last paper is this Thursday. But still cannot relax becos of music exams during the school hols. Dd so not looking forward to sch hols  -

for my boy's sch, it used to be extension of regular lessons (for EMS) and compulsory for last year P5s. they scrapped this practice this year, compulsory only for P6s. so now i worry without extension of regular lessons, can they teach more indepth or can only scratch the surface of the subjects, given that Science has so little periods per week.

In dd's school, supplementary classes are extension of lesson time, which is why it is compulsory. So, unless your child goes for tuition or you teach them yourself, they will miss out some of the stuff if they skip the lesson.

Same in dd's school. -
I just really feel like DD is not prepared for this CA at all. I guess it did not help that she had her piano exam on 26 Feb, just 2 days before her 1st paper, and so was practising hard for it. School CCA continues twice a week, even during exam week, and on top of that, she has to stay back in school to train for upcoming competition.
I guess that’s why the frustration. So many things to do, so little time.
Jedamum - yes, I’m asking DD to try and score for the other sections in CL, to try and pull up the marks. Not enough time to do anything abt the compre section at this point in time. As for HCL, it’s so heavy in writing, to be honest, I’m totally giving up for this CA. At least try not to do too badly for the 4 core subjects. -

That's the main reason why I persuaded dd to stop her music lessons. It's just get too overwhelming with all these crazy workload & long hours in school. I'm not even talking about having a childhood now, just sufficient rest time & I'm grateful enough. It's a relief for both of us after stopping her music lessons. 1 less thing to worry about at the back of our headI just really feel like DD is not prepared for this CA at all. Yes, during her recent piano exam, DD was really unhappy and was acting up. Had a talk with her, and I've just told the piano teacher that from now on, we won't be taking anymore piano exams. DD just wants to learn to play the piano for pleasure, not for certificates. She is also thinking about dropping ballet after the RAD exams in April, and I totally second that. Like you said, her schedule nowadays is really crazy, and I really just want her to have a bit of room to breathe and rest.

Somehow, things we signed up for \"fun\" during her early years get snowballed into another source of stress, as it becomes exam after exam, year after year. DD is a very laidback, dreamy sort of girl. Hopefully with less of these \"external\" stress factors, she will be better able to focus on schoolwork, esp CL. Like it or not, she still has to take PSLE next year, sighzzz.... -
same same here..While thinking about dd tuitions and ballet time slots during last yr december, I was wondering should I stop dd from going for ballet lessons as she will need to go for extra weekday ballet practise from Jan to Mar in preparation for April graded exam. Surprisingly she agreed to it when I brought it up to her....Nevertheless, now she is still very busy..

dd’s sch also have supplementary classes which are extension of the normal but parents can opt out if they want to by submitting a letter stating the reason…
HCL and other extra classes like MO or HOTS (higher order thinking sci) are all optional…
some of these classes are only offered to high ability students… so is like a catch-22 situation… the child with good result will be loaded with even more hw… whereas an avg child will have more time coz lesser hw and classes…
the only compulsory for upper primary is to take up at least 1 cca … -
DS said there is no new lessons during supplementary class for math and science. Mostly the teachers gave them more practise execrises related to what had been taught in class and went through with them.
For english and chinese sometimes new words and phrases were introduced and more practise execrises. Anyway the math and science teachers are not from their class…so there we have a rough ideas now…
DH is going to clarify with the HODs and i will update you on these matters…
