I have PM-ed u. My DS’ score is not at that level, nono.
Thanks!

I am thinking of if I can get some 'consensus' on the 'curving of Chinese' then I can write a more complete piece on how to tackle Chinese under the \"working with children who are academically challenged\" thread (would be a long piece and hope I can make time to write it out).

Congrats! Sounds like overall exceeded expectations too.

I dont think the better grade for Chinese was across the board (sorry, theory disbunked). My DS’ Chinese grade stayed the same as prelims despite feeling he did better in Oral and LC and written components. His improvements came in English and Science.
I am half-hearted about her AL16 coz I would prefer her to go into NA to develop and grow at a slower pace but seems like now have no choice but to go into Express (which is never my intention). I feel MOE should give parents a choice to choose NA despite qualified for Express (I know where my GN stands in terms of academics as my training has been all the years focusing on 'exam smart/focused'). I could foresee she struggling even more in sec school Express class that I feel is not a necessary pain for such growing up years that are supposed to be more fun/memorable. (穿着不适合自己的鞋,会痛苦的走四年。)

Perhaps your DS' score has been high enough and at that level, it cannot be curved up anymore (meaning they will only curve up a certain segment below certain marks and not the higher level since AL1 is reserved for only a limited number of students)?

All along (since more than 10 years ago), I believe that the grade for Chinese is quite curved upwards (based on the As my son and nephew got despite their half past six levels).

When I looked at my grand niece AL3 for Chinese, I sort of confirmed my speculation even more (she is a ‘half mute’ during oral conversation throughout her 6 years during school’s practices and usually scored around 50% with teachers’ frequent comment as ‘inaudible’, and I gave up training her on oral as ‘not value for time’), her compo is so-so maybe 65% type, listening is ok around 90%, written is OK around 90%). Her school’s averaged score usually was around 70s. She cannot hold a Chinese conversation or read another Chinese word out from her textbook vocab range (I trained her only for exam purposes due to her ‘limited capacity’).

So this AL3 seemed like a ‘curved score’. Did anyone feel similar (as in your child’s Chinese score is ‘better than expected)’?

Asking out of curiosity.

*She exceeded expectation of Eng and Chinese at AL3 and Science and Math at AL5 when I was forecasting AL5 for Languages (her Eng score in school usually around high 50s / low 60s incl prelim) and Science and an AL6 for Math (failed her Math or barely passed throughout her P6 school exams). It has been a tough 6 years of struggles for her and we are all glad that this segment ends on a higher note.

Not sure about the full screening, but I discovered that the Pap smear has been replaced by an HPV test for those over 30 yo. I was planning to book one when Omicron hit and polyclinics and GP clinics were overloaded, so I've postponed it for the time being. Maybe in a couple of months' time.

I'm ambivalent about doing a lot of screening at my age - better not to check if all seems well? Sometimes I feel that modern medicine just drags out the long years of weakness and poor health.

You may book with Singapore Cancer Centre and get your free mammogram and HPV test on same day.

These three common cancers are with good survival rates if caught them early: cervix, colon, and breast, and I really encourage all to go for screening when the 'age is right'. So really no good reasons for 'modern generation' people to only discover such cancers at late stages. Other cancers more difficult to catch and so no choice have to risk.

I went SCC (Bishan) maybe 2 years ago and the people there were friendly and experienced. Waiting time (with appointment) was also reasonable (remember was about 15 minutes).

https://www.healthhub.sg/a-z/costs-and-financing/30/breast-cancer-screening-subsidies#:~:text=The%20Singapore%20Cancer%20Society%20offers,Multi%2DService%20Centre%20in%20Bishan.

* I read the above website and now seems chargeable if without Blue / Orange CHAS. My time was free (maybe I caught the 'promotion' during breast cancer month). I received an invitation email and so just booked the appointment.

• RE: All About Working With Children Who Are Weak Academically

Hi xueyan

Read about your predicament and I shall share some of my thoughts from my personal experiences.

1.\tYou said your DS was diagnosed with ADD and then managed to be promoted to Express in sec school. This I find is an achievement as really not easy.

My grand niece now is in P5 (next year PSLE). From my observation, she has some degree of ADD (‘slow’, poor memory retention, behaving like almost a mute meaning don’t ask questions at all, etc etc). No formal diagnosis coz she is not ‘disruptive’ type.

I give her ‘specialised tuition’ as I assessed outside tutors can’t help her much. She needs ‘filtered materials’ and not all materials with my aim of getting her to score well enough to be eligible for NA promotion. I only tuition her about 4-5 hours per week for 3 subjects (once a week only when she comes my house from 12 pm to 8 pm on weekend when I will plan activities for her).

So far so good that both of us happy that she is hitting her NA target (genuinely having very good and trusting relationship among her and my family members). She will lose careless marks here and there but those are expected and so I don’t get into nags or ‘despair’.

She is strong in sports and so we have a current consensus that she will have to clear her O levels to be good enough for a sports management diploma (and I am very confident that she can make ‘good enough money’ in a job of her interest probably as a sports/yoga/pilates/etc coach).

2.\tYou said your DS passed all Sec 1 subjects and again this to me is no mean feat. My nephew then failed 4 or 5 subjects in his Sec 1 final exams (he still got promoted to Sec 2 Express). This nephew is highly intelligent but fell into arcade gaming with friends at that time. Even then, I didn’t engage any tutor for him as I assessed it was an attitude issue with nothing wrong with his intelligence. I had a good talk with him (he doesn’t have a mum) and told him we would have to ‘experiment’ with tutors by the end of Sec 2 if his results didn’t show improvements.

He hates tuition and finally made an effort to study on own to avoid tuition (he had to learn to juggle among his studies, play, and sports). His L1R5 is a single digit for O level and now a very sensible 18 yo boy who ‘respects’ me a lot (will bake cookies and spend 45 minutes travelling to my house to give me kind). My patience with him reaps boundless rewards.

Do not despair and do not compare (with those ‘normal’ kids) basically. I seeing your DS as ‘good enough’ and I hope you can see him too from a better light. Your DS is really good enough and deserve a big hug! (your kinder words and attitude may make or break him as in whether can grow up to be an emotionally stable person or not, and so this would be an area that I would focus more over academic results, coz with emotional stability, other ‘achievements’ will come naturally).

(BTW, don’t need to pass ALL subjects. If can’t cope, by end of Sec 3 can start to ‘filter’ out weakest non-relevant subjects to prepare for O levels. It can be easier if you can let it be.).

Best wishes.

Actually, at first I thought it's common sense too.
Then hor...after finding out that CCS had to explain the rationale of \"rationing\" to business leaders in such detail, I started to accept that it doesn't come naturally to most people.

Has it got to do with my observation of some highly educated people have poor critical thinking skills (something wrong with our education system)?

This COVID episode presents itself good opportunities to share with older kids about the meaning of 'information' and how one must read from multiple sources and preferably from multiple languages and learn how to discern facts from fiction before forming an opinion (and thereby course of actions) for self.

My girl said the biggest problem with the Japanese is most of them do not read or listen to news other than in Japanese and so their world vision is narrower/limited in that sense.

*I am actually quite disappointed with quite many highly educated people lacking critical thinking skills. Something wrong with our education system perhaps.

Hi Taiwan experts,
Need advice. I am planning to go to Taipei Oct nxt yr with my family of 4 (Hubby, 18yrs old boy & 12yrs old gal).
As it is my 1st time there & seem lost. Anyone can suggest a hotel that is convenient in Ximending & near to the mrt stn. Don’t want to waste too much time walking.
Driver charge NTD3,500 for 8 hours service to bring us around , extra hr at NTD500 , is it reasonable ? From Taoyuan airport to hotel, can we just take a taxi or should we hire a driver ? His charges seem expensive at NTD2,500 for both ways.
Appreciate any valuable advice or comments here. Thanks !
You can try to see whether you can catch any good deals with changirecommends. Their package seems to be reasonable. If you book more than $280, still can have some discount.

Which insurer offering cheaper but covers “as charge”? Any idea?

Stick to NTUC if your kids are having it coz they are the more conscientious in the market. Some may appear cheaper now but years down the road, their increments may (likely to) surpass NTUC (that i ever researched and spoke to several 'market people' to know they priced competitively). I think there's another round of premium increment coming soon.

NTUC's pool of clients is big enough and so it has more stability in maintaining premium in a way.

For the sake of my children, I would say no.

More often than not, for the sake of the children, the apparent answer is YES (I have seen many many cases).

*if your parents didn't divorce and forced themselves to stay together for the sake of the kid/s, you might have turned up worst.
