Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

So instead of spending time lamenting the inadequacies and unfairness of the system, send your child to the most suitable school nearest to you, based on your assessment of how you think your child will fare in the school. If you think your child is already an overachiever, and you are prepared to provide lots of academic support as a parent for your child, go ahead and fight tooth and nail to get into the popular schools. Otherwise, any other school will do as well, so you should just choose the one nearest to you that your child can excel in. Spend your energy on preparing your child for his new environment.


Another way to think about this: how would you feel if you work your heart out for a company and yet you are always rated amongst the bottom percentile during annual appraisals? If it is not because of the lack of quality and effort you put in, then it must be because the rest of your colleagues are really supermen and women. After the 3rd year, you will give up trying and decide that you should be what the company always rate you as: a loser. That's when the vicious cycle sets in.

Don't do it to your kids. The most important quality as a student is confidence about one's ability. Put your kid in the environment that maximises their chance of excelling at their level![/quote] :goodpost: Chief! :salute:

Priority for citizens not effective enough...

In life, we cannot please everyone. The ones who don't get it will say it is not fair and that teh system is broken. The ones who have it say that it is working and that it is the right way.

Surely there are other schools that are within 1km besides Ai Tong right? I also wonder if she would be crying foul over the system if the school within 3 mins' walk is a neighbourhood school and not Ai Tong.

PS: I have not alumni nor ex-student status and am SC. I believe the system is funtioning and am not complaining. Yes, I may not get my child into the school of my choice because I have no ties but I accept that and make alternative plans. In the end, my child's future is in his hands and mine. I am resposible for helping to educating him, not the school or the world.

Well said !
I am deem to sound harsh and unkind to some, but I believe we need to take responsibility for the choices we make. And if the first choice is not ideal, there is still a choice to rectify it, if only we are open & willing to do it. Lament and blaming will not help much.

P1 registration is going to be more crazy yr after yr, and the bubble is not sustainable and surely will burst one day. Current system is pointing all the way to essence system those ppl have been enjoying…

if she compare to non-alumni, non-grassroot, non-this, non-that.. clearly she got it..

But if all these are thrown it.. it became less clear liao..

It is often harder to remove existing privileges which folks have enjoyed for so long. Eaiser to implement something new but to take away. get uproar. Even those who stay within a school will be upset because it takes chances away from them to get their kids to the other schools they wish for. no win-win solutions to this.

Then parents will start to track where do the Principals and HODs of these ex-branded schools get posted to.
