Clearly, children of citizens living close to the school should be given higher priority.
This was debated hotly in KSP few months ago..

Apparently, it is not as \"clear\" as what the author wants it to be

if she compare to non-alumni, non-grassroot, non-this, non-that.. clearly she got it..

But if all these are thrown it.. it became less clear liao..

It is often harder to remove existing privileges which folks have enjoyed for so long. Eaiser to implement something new but to take away. get uproar. Even those who stay within a school will be upset because it takes chances away from them to get their kids to the other schools they wish for. no win-win solutions to this.

No NYPS, RGPS, CHS, Tao Nan etc etc...all renamed as ABC Primary School. Is this possible?

Then parents will start to track where do the Principals and HODs of these ex-branded schools get posted to. πŸ™‚

                  ChiefKiasu:

LOL... and the funny thing is, most parents new to Singapore education think P1 registration is the worst part of Primary school education. It's like - when I get my kid into the most popular school, my kid will have it made.

The fact is, the more popular the school, the more results-oriented it is likely to be, the more tuition/enrichment we have to send our kids, and the more we will complain about our kids being \"pushed\" by the garmen to study till they turn blue.

For the record, the reason why KiasuParents.com post and track the P1 Registration statistics is to let people know why they should avoid the most popular schools - they are next to impossible to get in if you have no affiliations, and even if you did manage to do so, it will be 6 years of tears, sleepness nights, and disillusion if your child does not perform up to your expectations.
                  Lots of truth there..

But hor, can I suggest of KSP can post the % of tuition these popular schools student go to, and the average amount each spend on the kids on tuition/enrichment etc.. The MOE may face less \"attack/criticism\" on it's P1 admission machinery.........

of coz, these data are not available to anyone lah.. as of now..

                  see.. data is useful..

Of coz again, if the parent choose the path with their eye WIDE OPEN (as in, with convincing tuition data and what to expect), they will have abandon the right to complain later on..

Now, I believe, and strongly believe, that many parent's belief is, the school's good results is due to the extra-ordinary teachers they have inside.. that's why they try ways and means to get in.. no? πŸ˜‰

I agree with Cheif. At the end of the day, parents need to evaluate the type of school our child will trive in. If the child ia acemedically inclined, perhaps such schools might be good for them to push them above and beyond. If the child is not academicaly inclined, perhaps a regular school is just as good. Gettign intothe school is only the first step. Too often I have seen parents asking if they should take their child out of a "branded" school because the child is seeing himself/herself as hopeless since always bottom of the class and failing tests. Self esteem does not gets rebuilt overnight esp when young children are not able to process complex thoughts and emotions as well as adults. Are we pushing our children to gain "face" for ourselves or really doing justice for our children?

Secondly, we seem to deem that getting our kids into "good" schools will preduce results. That is often not so. I often think that while getting in is stressful, staying the school is harder if the child cannot keep up. How often have we heard about parents having to transfer the child out of a branded school because child cannot cope?
